This post is in response to the question put forth by @generalfritz14.
“Do you believe there is a scenario where government censorship of online material can be in the best interest for the people?”
To put it simply, our government should almost never withhold information from its people. This country was founded so that things of this nature would never happen. The people of the United States own this country. They should be the ones to decide what information they receive. However, there are some instances where censoring information would be the most logical decision for political officials.
The people of the United States are controlled by what the government tells them. Their peace, lifestyles, moods, jobs, and other important factors of their lives are swayed by the government. As a result, the government has the power to throw the people of the United States into a state of hysteria. Additionally, media networks also shouldn’t release some of the world-changing news that they find. For example, if a media outlet discovers news of a deceased well respected president they might want to refrain from giving the nation that information. This news would entirely change how this person is viewed. Also, if this person stood for an important movement, then they definitely shouldn’t release the information.
As mentioned earlier, the government also has the power to throw the country into a hysteria. The government might not want to show the world breaking news that a meteorite is going to hit the earth in less than 24 hours. Doing this would cause the people of the U.S. and the world to go completely insane. In my opinion, people should be at peace in their final moments of life.
In closing, our country was founded on the fact that the people have more power than the government, but there are instances like these where the government should censor information. There will always be people arguing about this topic. This is one of the most controversial topics in the world
