Joy Discussion Paper
Starting off the movie, Joy is a younger girl who thinks very highly of herself and loves to use her imagination. She is confident, strong, independent, and has unlimited expectations for her near future. Her grandmother (Mimi) reassures her that the possibilities are endless and that she can do whatever she feels is possible. Fast forward many years later, Joy managed to make her way onto a boat with her father, ex-husband, step-sister, and her father's new girlfriend (Trudy). Joy manages to drop a wine glass because of the sudden tide causing Trudy to fluster, grabbing a mop Joy begins to squeeze the water and the glass out forcing her hands to bleed. Joy is later in the house with her family when an idea starts to occur in her head, although the family is very confused Joy tells them to be quiet and let her think. The reassuring family tells her it would be best for her to get some rest regardless if she is going to have nightmares or not. Awaking in the morning, Joy is confronted by her father who she then tells a favor is needed in return, allowing joy to explain a business proposal. When the incident with the mop and the glass occurred this gave Joy a new thought, a mop with a removable head that would soak up messes throughout the kitchen in only one wring. The family is still very confused by her design in which Joy then has one of her father's workers construct it for her out of metal. True entrepreneurs begin to think of things ahead of others and find solutions to problems that others can, just like we discussed in class. The design is still very sloppy, but the family then begins to understand the concept and Trudy finally allows her to contact a company located in California that can manage the mop the proper and even cheaper way. I feel this aspect of the movie is very Entrepreneurial because Joy is going out of her way to create something she has imagined in her head as a great idea, although ideas like this can sometimes be hit or miss, Joy continues to give it her all and show the family her imagination and skills. Another reason behind this being very Entrepreneurial is Joy thinking ahead of everyone else, nobody had ever seen anything like this which is not only why they were skeptical about the design in the first place, but also why this mop ended up being such an amazing product. Joy went through numerous interactions and struggled every day trying to get this mop on the market regardless of her failed attempts she kept trying.
Why it is interesting
Discussing question number two, I feel this is very interesting because of the in-depth detail the movie showed on problems lots of Entrepreneurs face daily. After watching the movie I feel I have gained a much better understanding of one's entrepreneurial abilities. Drive, and passion to be great is something not every entrepreneur has, but something an entrepreneur looks for or strives for. It was a multi-step process for Joy to reveal her product to the world and even after some successful attempts she was shot down almost completely more than a few times. Some entrepreneurs may feel this is as far as they might make it, forcing them to give up and cut their losses. In the movie, Joy has a mindset unlike anyone else, she is willing to push farther and harder than anyone else willing to go into a business like this. When introducing a product or idea can be a heavy process, which Joy was not exactly ready for but she adapted to her needs and even the consumer's needs showing she had what it takes. Demonstrating her product in the parking lot of a local grocery store, Joy was forced to leave the premises and had her product taken by the authorities. These are some of the risks she was willing to take, also as we discussed in class.
Interaction/Relationship
When Joy first sparked her idea she asked Trudy if she was willing to contribute to a major part of the invention, asking for a large amount of money. Trudy later agreed and gave Joy the funds she claimed she needed. Even after Joy managed to have some of the products produced by a company located in California she realized the company was charging her for mistakes that were made on their end. Joy was furious, but this is just a small part of entrepreneurship, taking chances and exchanging what you feel is necessary. In this situation, Joy felt this was a beneficial exchange on her part but later on realized the company producing the products had gone behind her back looking to make a profit of their own and steal her idea. This is a major risk when creating a new product, although the product had a patent placed on it the company was still able to benefit more on their end at the time. Soon after, Joy managed to fix this problem and continued to try and keep introducing this new invention to the world. Finally, Joy was successful, securing a spot on a national television show. The first attempt was a major failure, leaving joy frustrated and confused about why she was told the turnout would be different. Joy decided it was time for her to step in and take matters into her own hands allowing her to be the one to show and demonstrate how the product works on live TV. Joy had a certain way of talking to the consumers, telling the viewers exactly what they want and why they need it. When callers began to come in and the product started to sell Joy still managed to continue, being the great salesperson she truly is. Although she had just realized her selling capabilities, she was very proud and confident in herself that she could continue. Society today acts relatively the same, being easily persuaded by-products all over TV. If a salesperson on television tells you that you need something and shows you exactly why then you are more than likely to purchase this item. Joy took a major step forward, leaping in front of the competitors with the next best thing that consumers had not yet realized they needed. Although products are being introduced daily, only some may succeed because each product has to be almost perfect. Is the new product more conservative with materials? Is it cheaper to create? Will it benefit the consumers more and allow for a better product in the long run? Society can be poorly affected or greatly affected, communication is a key component in the world of vendors and company trade. Depending on the scenario, like the scenario in the movie, Society was greatly affected because of the way Joy had introduced her new product. It was like nothing anyone had ever seen and they were amazed, Joy handled herself in a very specific way, specific to only her. Society fully supported her after this had occurred even years after, others came to her seeking advice and recognition. Joy was a business woman and maybe even the best, others looked up to her while other entrepreneurs sometimes despised her.
