The Gulf Stream is slowing which is due to deep water formation in the North Atlantic slowing. The deep water formation is the start of the Conveyor Belt which is a huge heat distribution mechanism for the planet. Since the Gulf Stream brings warm air to NW Europe and Scandinavia, a slowdown in the Gulf Stream means this warm air does not get transported there, and the region cools.
