A few months ago, I wrote about currency risk for Europeans holding dollar-denominated assets. Today, I’m circling back to that topic, not to question my choices, but to offer a snapshot of where I currently stand.
Right now, I’ve got 14200 HBD in savings, earning a steady 15% APR. It’s a solid passive yield: interest is paid monthly, compounded automatically, with a 3-day withdrawal delay. So far, I haven’t had any reason to change course.
📉 The Dollar Has Slipped
HBD is pegged to the US dollar. And for someone like me, who measures value in euros, the recent drop in USD/EUR is impossible to ignore. As of now, 1 HBD is worth about €0,85. That means my 14200 HBD, once worth close to €13000, now equate to about €12070.
In other words: almost a year’s worth of yield has been erased by FX movement.
⚖️ But I’m Staying
I’m not reconsidering my position. My portfolio is diversified, I hold euro-based assets elsewhere, which naturally balance the currency exposure. I see my HBD position as one strategic leg of a broader structure, not the whole table.
The 15% APR is still attractive. And while the dollar has weakened recently, currencies move in cycles. A shift in interest rates, a global event, or maybe sentiment can swing the pendulum the other way.
💬 What About You?
Do you keep your savings in HBD despite the dollar's decline? Or are you adjusting your strategy to shield against currency erosion?
For now, I’m staying in. Alert, but confident. As I wrote in a past post: "Holding yield in dollars is like sailing: both course and wind matter. The wind may have shifted, but I’m not lowering the sails just yet."
