Amnesia, is the loss of a large chunk of memories, caused either by damage to the brain, by sickness or trauma at that, and of course, it does not respect age count but conversely similar is Infantile Amnesia which is memory loss as a result of rapid brain development. Right after birth, the brain begins to develop but memories are lost faster than they are created. I bet you could barely remember experiences you've had at a very young age.
Interestingly, we learn to speak whatever language prevalent in our immediate environment. Also, things are learnt at a very rapid rate. We don't remember experiences but we learn lessons? Quite interesting. These lessons, we grow up with them and they evolve into our persona which, of course, defines us. I can still recall flashes of my childhood memories but that would be at age 6 - which I'm not sure of.
Some say childhood amnesia only "deals" with traumatic experiences a child must have had and buries them deep beneath the trenches of our memories but recent studies show that due to the "fragile" nature of the brain, memories are lost in the formative years. Now since we have been able to establish that memories are lost but assimilation is retained, how important are these lessons?
I was discussing with someone few days ago and he told me an experience that intrigued him. Now this little lad- about 3-5 years of age- apparently, is a muslim who was performing an ablution. He carefully washed his hands, legs as he had observed was done by his parents. Now this guy, when he is of age would definitely forget that act but he would still be constantly performing ablution. This is the funny part, after he was done washing his hands and legs, he brought out his "John" and started to carefully wash it. Actions are taken extreme? Lessons over-learnt?
Now imagine the kind of influence a parent has over a child, which is largely through actions. If it were to be a dangerous act, that would have been a catastrophic practice. Why do you think Extremists recruit child soldiers? Simply because they are much easier to manipulate than adults. Not to mention a kid who has not been able to differentiate right from wrong. A child can be aggressive, calm, it all boils down to the upbringing. The importance of a parent's influence has been much too underrated.
