It is very hot in Nairobi at the moment. A coconut infused cocktail is the perfect way to cool off when it is hot. It is easy to buy some coconut infused alcohol but it is also very fun to make your own at home. If you love experimenting and combining different flavors, then infusing coconut into your cocktails will be a fun and tasty experience. Making infusions is a fun activity to do with friends especially now that it is very hot. There's no limit to what you can use to make infusions. Here is the process of making coconut-infused cocktails.
Coconut infused cocktails are so tasty and Potassium packed. They also add a new twist to all the tropical drinks. These drinks bring back feelings and memories of chilling by the beach or a pool while sipping some drinks. Infusions are made using a simple concept. You can cut up some coconuts and soak them into a spirit like vodka or gin and let them stay in the fridge for some time. There are other types of liquors to use including rum and tequila. The resulting mixture is a strong coconut infusion which can be used to mix up different boozy cocktails.
1. Chose the perfect Ingredient
Coconut is a very versatile ingredient. Simply take out the whites of a fresh coconut and cut it into small chunks. However, the smaller the chunks, the better, because the infusion will have stronger flavours. Make sure you chose a mature coconut for stronger taste. You can also use dried coconut but fresh coconut adds an extra flavour to the mixture. You can also spice up the infusions with cinnamon if you choose.
2. Choosing the Base Spirit
The base spirit is the alcohol that you will use to soak up the coconut. Rum is a very common choice for tropical drinks but you can still use vodka, tequila or gin. The base spirit used determines the infusions. Use a simple but high-quality base spirit that has not been flavoured. For example, you cannot use a raspberry flavoured base spirit to make coconut infusions as there will be two flavors and we are looking for a strong coconut flavour.
3. Prepping.
Once you have mixed the coconut, spice and the spirit, you can put it into a clean mason jar and close the top. After that, put it into the fridge for 2.5 weeks. Keep checking the flavour and make different batches. After the time is done, you can sieve then filter the mixture to get rid of the solid ingredients.
4. How to use the infusion.
The coconut infusions should be stored well in airtight containers to prevent them from going bad. They should not have a milky colour and when that happens it should not be used. An example of a cocktail that you can make with this infusion is the Sake Coconut Cocktail where you add sake, coconut infusion and fresh lime juice. Other famous cocktails are the coladas. Who knows, you can even come up with your own coconut-infused cocktails!
