Putting together the final notes for my vaccines post I feel a sense of irony knowing that had I given Esteban the MMR vaccine (which is said to protect against Measles, Mumps & Rubella) he may not have it now.
However... this is a good thing!
It is ironic because during my hours of research I have learned that by getting these mild and non fatal diseases as a child (which almost all of us did before the MMR vaccine was introduced) the immune system is being strengthened.
And as a vegan who lives mostly on raw fruit & veg (and a bedtime slurp on mummy's boob!) his immune system is already super strong.
So, it is highly unlikely now he will ever get it again. This and a bunch of other potential diseases.
It lasted three days. And now it is pretty much done. So, what's the big deal?
He has just received a NATURAL vaccine!
And there are NO side-effects to this natural vaccine.
Esteban appeared completely unconcerned. Though he did mimic our initial concern in his own amusing way.
"Esteban bouton" he said with his big eyes looking up at us. Translated this means Esteban's buttons!
Had we not been concerned, I doubt he would have noticed anything at all.
There was no fever and he wasn't anything less than his wonderful chirpy self throughout the three days in which the spots were very prominent.
Today they are almost gone, leaving behind only some white areas where his sun tan no longer shows. Which may or may not be permanent. And I really don't think he will care either way.
The facts about Rubella

Rubella is a very mild viral illness that, at least in children, is often not very apparent. The concern is mostly for pregnant women, whose babies may get congenital rubella syndrome if they are exposed at a certain point in pregnancy.
Normal course of the disease
It consists of low-grade fever and general tiredness, followed by a mild red rash that starts at the face and works its way down. It lasts only for a few days, and then itβs gone. In some cases, the eyes will be infected (like pink eye), although this is more common in adults.
Vaccine Use
This vaccine is made with the use of human diploid cells, i.e. aborted fetal tissue. The vaccine is supposed to confer 95 β 100% protection after one dose (given around 12 months).
Vaccine Side Effects
The vaccine has a long list of side effects, including: diabetes, fever, fainting, fatigue, diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, headache, dizziness, encephalitis, Guillain-Barre, seizures, ear infections, and more.
Myalgia (muscle pain), swelling of the lymph nodes, irritability, headache, low fever, and tingling of the skin are commonly reported.
A few studies have been conducted that showed a potential link between the MMR and autism. But this needs further research, which is not currently being done.
Bottom Line
Rubella in children is an incredibly mild illness with almost no risk of complications. If vaccination is considered, it should be chosen for adult women who may become pregnant and are not naturally immune to rubella. This is the only vulnerable population.
The forgotten fear of this word
It was strange for me when the word Rubella was first said by one of our community members whose child contracted it last week from other kids in her school. I immediately felt a sense of fear. I don't know what has been done to brainwash me but something kicked in at that moment. Some long forgotten connection which is still there deep within me.
It has also been interesting to see how other mothers have reacted to his condition. Yep. We have all been brainwashed my friends.
Thankfully we have this wonderful thing called the internet now and the fear didn't last long!
And I am keener now than ever to set the record straight.
