#Nipah virus is an another viral infection that affects respiratory system and central nervous system (brain).
Origin of virus
It was named after an area of Malaysia that was affected first.
First In 1998 - Malaysia's Kampung Sungai Nipah.
Bangladesh, from 2001 to 2013 there was several Nipah outbreaks.
First outbreak was in Siliguri, West Bengal in 2001. Ok
How it is spreaded/transmitted
Direct contact with NiV infected person
Direct contact with infected pigs
Direct contact with infected bats
Symptoms
Fever and headache in 3-14 days of exposure and an incubation period of 5 to 14 days.
Clinical signs are headache, fever, dizziness and vomiting, followed by drowsiness, disorientation and mental confusion.
Some have a respiratory illness during the early part of their infections, and other half of the patients with severe neurological signs also show pulmonary signs.
Treatment:
No vaccine currently available.
Managed through intensive supportive care.
Do not consume fruits that have fallen on to the ground.
Now, Nipah virus has so far claimed 10 lives in Kozhikode and Malappuram districts in north Kerala.
