Exodus 7:19-21
We saw that God was instructing Moshe (Moses) about the reality that Far'oh (Pharaoh) is not likely to change his mind very soon in our reading last week. He gave Moshe foreknowledge of what the ruler would do and what could be done about it.
Those instructions are being carried out in today's reading. Aharon (Aaron) was told to stretch out the staff over the river Nile and you can see the resulting blood in today's cover photo from the classic movie "Ten Commandments."
In the movie, Moshe told the ruler that there would be nothing but blood to drink for seven days, but the written word states the part about seven days as a matter of record after they suffered for a week. I am surprised at the differences between the book and the movie. The book is very matter of fact while the movie invents characters and details of their lives and loves.
Another seeming glitch in this passage is that it states that all vessels, plus all rivers, ponds, pools, etc. became blood. But next week, the magicians will copy this miracle and I wonder were they got clear water to change if all of it was already blood. Food for thought.

And YHVH said to Moses, "Say to Aaron, 'Take your staff and stretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt, over their rivers, their canals, and their ponds, and all their pools of water, so that they may become blood, and there shall be blood throughout all the land of Egypt, even in vessels of wood and in vessels of stone.' "
Moses and Aaron did as YHVH commanded. In the sight of Pharaoh and in the sight of his servants he lifted up the staff and struck the water in the Nile, and all the water in the Nile turned into blood. And the fish in the Nile died, and the Nile stank, so that the Egyptians could not drink water from the Nile. There was blood throughout all the land of Egypt.
