Apabila anda ingin mengunjungi sebuah tempat saat bertandang ke Aceh, itu adalah Masjid Raya Baiturrahman, mesjid ini adalah kebanggaan masyarakat Aceh . Mesjid Ini adalah sebuah situs bersejarah yang telah mendunia dan sudah berdiri kokoh sejak era kejayaan Kesultanan Aceh dan bertahan hingga saat sekarang ini. Masjid ini telah melalui perjuangan yang sangat panjang dan berbagai hal, mulai dari tragedi pembakaran oleh kolonial Belanda tahun 1873 hingga hantaman tsunami di akhir 2004. Namu sampai sekarang masih berdiri dengan gagahnya dan menjadi simbol kebanggaan masyarakat Aceh.

Dan dari riwayat sejarah pembangunan mesjid ini mencatat ada dua versi sejarah mengenai mesjid ini. Sebagian sumber menyebutkan masjid ini didirikan pada 1292 M oleh Sultan Alauddin Johan Mahmudsyah. Sementara, sumber yang lain menyebutkan masjid ini didirikan oleh Sultan Iskandar Muda pada 1612 M, itulah dua sumber sejarah yang belum terpecahkan sampai sekarang ini.

Runtuhnya bangunan masjid ini memicu meletusnya perlawanan masyarakat Aceh. Mereka berjuang mempertahankan masjid hingga darah penghabisan, karna mereka menganggap mesjid ini adalah simbol syariat islam dan simbol kejayaan islam di Aceh pada saat itu, runtuhnya mesjid berarti runtuhnya islam dan masyarakat siap berjihat dalam berperang melawan kafir belanda.Pada pertempuran tersebut, dari pihak Belanda kehilangan seorang panglima perang mereka yang sangat terkenal yaitu, Major General Johan Harmen Rudolf Köhler pada 14 April 1873.

Pembangunan ulang masjid ini merupakan bagian dari upaya meredakan resistensi rakyat Aceh terhadap pendudukan serdadu Belanda, karena serdadu belanda tahu jika masyarakat Aceh sangat mencintai mesjid ini dan rela mengorbankan harta benda hingga nyawa demi mesjid ini. Proses pembangunan ulang Majid Raya Baiturrahman ini berlangsung pada 1879-1881 M. Arsitektur bangunan baru yang langsung dibuat oleh de Bruchi yang mengadaptasi gaya Moghul (India).

Van Aken, dilakukan pembangunan dua kubah di sisi kanan dan kiri masjid. Selanjutnya, pada tahun 1958-1965, bangunan masjid kembali diperluas. Pada perluasan kedua ini ditambahkan dua kubah dan dua menara di sisi barat (mihrab). Kelima kubah ini merupakan perlambang lima elemen dalam Pancasila dan rukun islam karna masyarakat Aceh sangat indentik dengan Pancasila dan rukun iman karna mereka selalu berpegang teguh kepada dua hal tersebut.

Pada tahun 1992, dilakukan pembangunan tambahan dengan penambahan dua kubah dan lima menara. Selain itu, dilakukan perluasan halaman masjid sehingga total luas area masjid saat ini menjadi 16.070 meter persegi. Saat tragedi tsunami terjadi di Aceh dengan ketinggian 21 meter menghantam pesisir Banda Aceh pada 26 Desember 2004 silam, masjid ini adalah termasuk bangunan yang selamat meskipun terjadi kerusakan di beberapa bagian masjid tapi tidak terlalu parah dan di mesjid ini juga banyak nyawa masyarakat Aceh selamat saat tragedi menyanyat hati tesebut. Upaya renovasi mesjid pasca tsunami menelan dana sebesar kurang lebih Rp5 miliar. Dana tersebut berasal dari bantuan dunia internasional, antara lain Saudi Charity Campaign. Proses renovasi selesai pada 15 Januari 2008. Saat ini, Masjid Raya Baiturrahman menjadi pusat pengembangan aktivitas keislaman bagi masyarakat Banda Aceh dan sekitarnya.
