Solar cells convert sunlight into an electrical current. The first practical silicon solar cell was created in 1954, by a team of scientists named Daryl Chaplin, Calvin Souther and Gerald Pearson working together at Bell Labs, USA.
The team demonstrated their solar panel by using it to power a small toy Ferris wheel and a solar powered radio transmitter.
Those first silicon cell were about 6 percent efficient at converting the energy in sunlight into electricity. This was a huge improvement over any previous cells.
The year 1954 therefore, marked the beginning of a new era, leading eventually to the realization of one of mankind's most cherished dreams ------
The harnessing of the almost limitless energy of the sun for the uses of civilization.
