Daniel Boone led a group of settlers through the mountains from Fort Watauga in Tennessee, making the road through the Cumberland Gap, and created Fort Boonesborough. Daniel Boone lived there from 1775 to 1779. The area was part of Virginia at that time. It was one of the first English speaking communities west of the Appalachian Mountains. The construction of the new fort began in 1934, a half mile from the original site and was completed in 1974.

I also went to the original site of Fort Boonesborough and a civil war fort around the area. They will be in my next post if you want to check them out.
