Am I the asshole? I asked myself that question several years ago and this community fits me like a glove.
I am Cuban, from Havana (the capital) and in my country, at least, going to live in a province is seen as a setback, while going to another country is a step forward.
And it turns out that I was married to a doctor who got a job abroad and we were going to live there, in Mexico.
For any Cuban that would have been the dream, paradise, but not for me, because in reality, what I wanted was to get a divorce. I didn't do it at the time, because if I did, she wouldn't go on a trip, and she really deserved it and needed it. Me too, but I don't think I would have (we would have) been happy.
Once she traveled and settled down, the relationship ended, in words, but not in papers. And then, on a work trip to the province of Las Tunas, I met the woman who is now my wife and I came to live in the east of the country.
It turns out that many of my acquaintances didn't understand that. They asked me are you an asshole?. They said that I should have left and once there, with work, I would leave her and look for another woman. They said that it was better to be unhappy there than here, and many other things like that.
But it turns out that I am happy here.
It is true that in my country the economic situation is getting worse and worse and even worse; while Mexico is improving every day, Yes, it is true. There I would have had everything I wanted and I could even help my mother a little.
But I would not have been happy. I would not have made her happy either. I would have been far from my family, I would not have been able to dedicate myself to writing and doing what I like.
I have all that here in Las Tunas, with Elvira.
On a spiritual, professional and cultural growth level, Las Tunas has been an immense qualitative leap. Here I have been able to develop in aspects of life that I never thought I could. And always with Elvira at my side, supporting me. Supporting us.
There are things that are worth more than all the money in the world and one of those is love. As cliché as this sounds.
But I am sure of this now. At the beginning, before I had a steady job and so on, when the economic situation worsened, I don't deny that I asked myself, am I the asshole for having stayed here?
Over there with money and unhappiness vs here with happiness, spiritual and professional growth, but with the Cuban economic crisis.

¿Seré estúpido? Esa pregunta me la hice hace varios años y esta comunidad me viene como anillo al dedo.
Soy cubano, de La Habana (la capital) y en mi país, al menos, irse a vivir a una provincia se ve como un atraso, mientras que irse a otro país, es un adelanto.
Y resulta que estuve casado con una doctora que consiguió un trabajo en el extranjero y nos iríamos a vivir a allá, a México.
Para cualquier cubano eso hubiera sido el sueño, el paraíso, pero no para mí, pues en realidad, lo que quería era divorciarme. No lo hice en ese momento, porque, de hacerlo, ella no se iría de viaje, y de verdad que se lo merecía y lo necesitaba. Yo también, pero no creo que hubiera (hubiéramos) sido feliz.
Una vez que viajó y se estableció, pues la relación terminó, de palabras, aunque no de papeles. Y en eso, en un viaje de trabajo a la provincia de Las Tunas, conocí a la que hoy en día es mi mujer y me vine a vivir al oriente del país.
Resulta que muchos de mis conocidos no entendieron eso. Me preguntaban ¿tú eres estúpido?. Decían que debía haberme ido y una vez allá, con trabajo, la dejaba y me buscaba otra. Decían que mejor allá infeliz que aquí, y muchas otras cosas como esas.
Pero resulta que aquí soy feliz.
Cierto que en mi país la situación económica va de peor en peor y aún peor; mientras que México mejora cada día, Sí, es cierto. Allá hubiera tenido de todo lo que quisiera y podría hasta ayudar un poco a mi madre.
Pero no hubiera sido feliz. No la hubiera hecho feliz tampoco. Hubiera estado lejos de mi familia, no pudiera dedicarme a escribir y a hacer lo que me gusta.
Todo eso lo tengo aquí en Las Tunas, con Elvira.
A nivel espiritual, profesional y de crecimiento cultural, Las Tunas ha sido un salto cualitativo inmenso. Aquí he podido desarrollarme en aspectos de la vida que jamás creí que podría. Y siempre con Elvira a mi lado, apoyándome. Apoyándonos.
Hay cosas que valen más que todo el dinero del mundo y una de esas es el amor. Por más cliché que suene esto.
Pero de esto estoy seguro ahora. Al inicio, antes de tener trabajo fijo y demás, cuando la situación económica arreció, no les niego que llegué a preguntarme am ai the asshole por haberme quedado aquí?
Allá con dinero e infeliz vs aquí con felicidad, crecimiento espiritual y profesional, pero con la crisis económica cubana.
¿Qué creen?
