Today, I'm bringing you something incredibly simple yet delicious. I'm a huge fan of hot dogs; I've said it before – if I can swap one meal a week for hot dogs, I'm happy. That's why, when I do my weekly family grocery shopping, I always try to pick up some sausages.
Perros calientes al estilo "Bakersfield" ¡Mi versión casera con un toque de queso Gouda!
Hoy les traigo algo muy sencillo pero sabroso. Soy súper fan de los perros calientes, ya lo he dicho antes, si todas las semanas puedo sustituir una comida por perros calientes, soy feliz, por eso en el mercado de comida familiar semanal, si es posible compro salchichas para potencialmente hacerlos.
This week, I bought some Polish sausages that I really like, and it occurred to me that they'd be perfect for trying a hot dog style I've seen on TikTok for a while now. A Mexican family in Bakersfield, California, makes them, and they always livestream, so I can see how many people buy them. They're American sausages wrapped in bacon, topped with onions and bell peppers sautéed in the bacon grease, along with classic sauces like mayonnaise and ketchup.
Está semana compré unas que me gustan mucho que son salchichas polacas y se me ocurrió que servirÃan perfectamente para probar un tipo de perro caliente que vengo viendo desde hace mucho tiempo en tik tok. Los hacen una familia de mexicanos en Bakersfield, California y siempre transmiten en vivo donde puedo notar lo mucho que la gente les compra. Son salchichas americanas enrolladas con tocineta, y le colocan como topping cebolla y morrón que sofrÃen en la misma grasa que el tocino suelta, junto a las tÃpicas salsas como mayonesa y ketchup.

Checking the fridge, I noticed I had three strips of bacon left over from another meal, so I decided to finally try these hot dogs. Since I know not everyone in my house is an onion lover, I made the rest in the traditional style of my country: with cabbage, sausage, and sauces. The bacon wasn't very long, so I couldn't wrap the sausages perfectly. In fact, it's hard to find good-sized bacon where I live; I've had this problem before when trying to make other bacon-wrapped dishes that don't get fully covered because the strips are too short.
Revisando la nevera note que sobraron de otra comida tres tiras de tocineta asi que decidi probar finalmente este tipo de perros calientes. Como se que no todos en casa son amantes de la cebolla, el resto lo hice como son tradicionalmente en mi pais, con repollo, la salchicha y sus salsas. La tocineta no es muy larga, asà que no pude enrollar muy bien las salchichas, de hecho, es difÃcil encontrar tocineta de buen tamaño por donde vivo, ya me ha pasado antes que he intentado hacer otras comidas envueltas en tocineta que no cubren bien por ser cortas.
But I held them in place with wooden toothpicks so they could cook alongside the sausage, and I applied what that family does: I used the bacon grease to sauté the onions and a bit of sweet chili with chopped garlic. I also added some adobo and ground black pepper for extra flavor. After a while, when everything was ready, I put the sausage in the bun, added sauces, and then the sautéed (or caramelized, as some call them) onions.
Pero las sujete con palillos de madera para poder cocerlas junto a la salchica y aplique lo que esta familia hace, aproveche la grasa de la tocineta para ir sofriendo las cebolla y un poco de ajà dulce con ajo troceado. Le coloque además un poco de adobo y pimienta negra molida para darle más gusto. Luego de un rato que todo estuvo listo pase la salchicha al pan, le coloque salsas y luego la cebolla sofrita o caramelizada como algunos también le llaman.
I added a personal touch to enhance the flavor even more. Taking advantage of a piece of Gouda cheese I had in the fridge, I grated it and placed it on top of the onions while they were still hot. After a bit, it started to melt, which gave it a much stronger flavor combined with the onions—something I personally really enjoyed. Although these are very popular among Mexicans in that area where they're sold, I know not everyone here is an onion fan. But if you don't mind them, it's definitely something you should try sometime; they turned out to be really tasty, and I highly recommend them.
Yo le di un toque personal para agregarle mucho más sabor, aprovechando que tenÃa un pedazo de queso amarillo tipo gouda en la nevera, lo rallé y le coloque encima de la cebolla cuando esta aún estaba caliente, al cabo de un rato se comenzó a derretir y eso le dio un sabor mucho más fuerte, combinado con el de la cebolla, algo que personalmente me gusto. Aunque es muy popular entre los mexicanos en esa localidad donde los venden, se que por aca no todas las personas son amantes de la cebolla, pero si no tienes problemas con eso es algo que deben probar alguna vez, definitivamente resultaron ser muy sabrosos, los recomiendo.
