After making a pass at cooking and identifying that there are some things I like to cook, our relationship improved a lot. Life in the hostel also contributed to that, because with so many people around, mealtimes were always the thing that brought us together. Every now and then, a nice group would form to share a good time, and if people passing by were lucky enough to be there on a 29th, they could also try gnocchi made by me. This year, I made a resolution to myself to cook them once a month, and I can't believe I'm already halfway through the challenge 😃.
Después de hacer las pases con la cocina e identificar que hay algunas cosas que me gusta cocinar, nuestra relación mejoró bastante. La vida en el hostel en Ushuaia también contribuyó a que eso pasara, ya que con tanta gente dando vueltas, la hora de la comida siempre era lo que nos unía. Cada tanto, lograba formarse un lindo grupo como para compartir un buen momento, y si la gente de paso tenia la suerte de estar ahí un 29, también podrían probar ñoquis hechos por mí. Este año, me propuse a mí misma cocinarlos una vez por mes, y ya me parece increíble que haya llegado la mitad del desafío 😃.
Eating gnocchi on the 29th of every month is a tradition that, as far as possible, is quite common in Argentina. I don't know where else it is widespread, but at least we already have this day set aside for it. I like to prepare them and I have no idea when I learned to make them, but I can humbly say that I am getting better and better at it. Before I had the premise that I made gnocchi once or twice a year because they take a lot of work to prepare, but to make things interesting, this year I decided to make them every month.
Comer ñoquis los días 29 de cada mes es una tradición que, en la medida de lo posible, se cumple bastante en Argentina. Desconozco en qué otros lugares se extiende esto, pero al menos nosotros, ya tenemos este día definido para esto. A mí me gusta prepararlos y no tengo idea de cuando aprendí a hacerlos, pero humildemente puedo decir que cada vez me salen mejor. Antes tenía la premisa de que una o dos veces por año hacía ñoquis porque llevan mucho trabajo prepararlos, pero para hacer las cosas interesantes, este año decidí que los haría cada mes.
This challenge started by chance on the 29th of January, when on a rather quiet night in the hostel I was with Maxi, one of the many guests I made friends with during those days. When we were figuring out dinner, we noticed that it was the 29th and as we each had two potatoes and the ingredients to make a tomato sauce, we decided it would be a good idea to make gnocchi for two. To make this pasta, the base is mashed potatoes that are mixed with egg and flour to form a dough. It is then stretched into tubes and finally cut into small cubes. The final step before boiling them would be to score them with a special device for this (or you can also achieve a similar effect by rolling each cube along the tines of a fork), but I never do this because I don't want to add more work to the job.
Este reto empezó de casualidad el 29 de enero, cuando en una noche bastante tranquila en el hostel estaba con Maxi, uno de los tantos huéspedes con los que me hice amiga esos días. Al momento de resolver la cena, notamos que era 29 y como cada uno tenía dos papas y los ingredientes para hacer una salsa de tomate, decidimos que sería buena idea hacer ñoquis para dos. Para hacer esta pasta, la base es un puré de papas que se mezcla con huevo y harina hasta formar una masa. Luego, se estira en forma de tubos y finalmente se cortan en pequeños cubitos. El paso final antes de hervirlos sería marcarles unas líneas con un artefacto especial para esto (o también se puede lograr un efecto parecido haciendo rodar cada cubito por los dientes de un tenedor), pero yo nunca hago esto porque no quiero agregar más trabajo al trabajo.
Making gnocchi is a fun task made up of simple steps, but can be quite time-consuming depending on the number of diners. In January we only made gnocchi for two, but by the following month, word had spread that I liked cooking this and more people wanted to join us for dinner. Just this year, February did not have 29 days so I prepared the gnocchi on the 28th in order to meet the special date. In order to afford the cost of making gnocchi for about 12 people, I decided to split the grocery bill between all of us and for $4 each, we ate gnocchi until we were tired. This was a fun day in which we all chipped in, and although we started cooking around 6 PM, dinner was not ready until 10 PM.
Hacer ñoquis es una tarea entretenida compuesta de pasos simples, pero puede tomar bastante tiempo dependiendo de la cantidad de comensales. En enero solo preparamos ñoquis para dos, pero al siguiente mes, ya se había corrido el rumor de que a mí me gustaba cocinar esto y más gente quiso unirse a la cena. Justo este año, febrero no tuvo 29 días así que preparé los ñoquis el 28 para poder cumplir con la fecha especial. Para poder afrontar los gastos de hacer ñoquis para unas 12 personas, decidí dividir la cuenta del super entre todos y por $4 cada uno, comimos ñoquis hasta cansarnos. Esta fue una jornada divertida en las que todos colaboramos con algo, y a pesar de haber empezado a cocinar alrededor de las 6 PM, la cena estuvo lista recién a las 10 PM.
After the successful mass dinner, I decided that I would make gnocchi every month, to see who I would share them with each time. In the hostel there are always people passing through, so for March we were another group of all different people but we were still a big group. By then, I knew how to calculate the quantities of all the ingredients and even how to organise the people so that we could all make some at the same time and get the dinner going. A few people chopped potatoes for the mashed potatoes, then I assembled the dough, then another group made the shape of each gnocchi while another group cut the vegetables for the sauce. All this mess was fun, and of course there was never a lack of music and wine while it was happening.
Después de la exitosa cena multitudinaria, decidí que haría ñoquis todos los meses, para ver con quien los compartía cada vez. En el hostel siempre hay gente de paso, así que para marzo fuimos otro grupo de todas personas diferentes pero igual éramos un grupo grande. Para entonces, ya sabía calcular bien las cantidades de todos los ingredientes y hasta como organizar a la gente para que todos hagamos un poco en simultaneo y sacar la cena adelante. Un poco de gente cortando papas para el puré, luego yo armando la masa, más tarde otro grupo haciendo la forma de cada ñoqui mientras otro grupo cortaba las verduras para la salsa. Todo este revuelto era divertido, y por supuesto nunca faltaba la música y el vino mientras todo ocurría.
I left Ushuaia the first days of April, so the 29th of April and May I was already at home with my family, so the gnocchi were only for four people. Today June 29th I am at home and in a while I have to start with all the preparations to cook for 5 people. Making gnocchi is something I enjoy doing, both doing it and sharing the moment with the people I love. For now I've been fulfilling all the days of the challenge: there are still another six months to go, so we'll see who joins the famous dinner every time 😃.
Me fui de Ushuaia los primeros días de abril, así que los 29 de abril y mayo ya estuve en mi casa con mi familia, por lo que los ñoquis solo fueron para cuatro personas. Hoy 29 de junio estoy en mi casa y en un rato tengo que empezar con todos los preparativos para cocinar para 5 integrantes. Hacer ñoquis es algo que me gusta, tanto hacerlo como compartir el momento con las personas que quiero. Por ahora vengo cumpliendo con todos los días del reto: todavía quedan por delante otros seis meses, así que veremos quien se une a la famosa cena cada vez 😃.
