I often say that I don't like cooking that much, but when I think about it I realise that this is not the case. I like to cook, I just don't like to do it so often. That's why I always try to eat quick or simple meals on a daily basis, but I enjoy it when I feel like making my traditional lentil stew or gnocchi on the 29th. When I was in Ushuaia I tried not to cook so much every day, but there were some days when I had to put my hands in the dough and invest a little time in eating something delicious 😃.
Muchas veces digo que no me gusta tanto cocinar, pero cuando lo pienso con detenimiento me doy cuenta de que esto no es así. Me gusta cocinar, lo que no me gusta es hacerlo tan frecuentemente. Por eso siempre trato de comer comidas rápidas o sencillas en el día a día, pero disfruto cuando tengo ganas de hacer mis tradicionales guisos de lentejas o los ñoquis del 29. Cuando estaba en Ushuaia trataba de no cocinar tanto todos los días, pero hubieron algunos días en los que me tocó poner las manos en la masa e invertir un poquito de tiempo en comer algo delicioso 😃.
When the weather in Ushuaia was sunny or the temperatures not so freezing, I would definitely take advantage of those days to go trekking. I didn't even think about it: I would buy a sandwich at the corner kiosk and head for the mountains without wasting any more time. But when the day was cold and cloudy, I felt like staying in the hostel with everything heated. It was at those times that I would take the opportunity to cook something different, or make a lot of food to freeze and have it ready for another day.
Cuando el clima en Ushuaia estaba soleado o con temperaturas no tan congeladas, sin dudarlo aprovechaba esos días para hacer trekking. Ni lo pensaba: compraba un sandwich en el kiosco de la esquina y me iba a la montaña sin perder más tiempo. Pero cuando el día estaba frío y nublado, daban ganas de quedarse en el hostel con todo calefaccionado. Era en esos momentos en los que aprovechaba para cocinar algo distinto, o hacer preparaciones en cantidad para poder congelar y tenerlas listas para otro día.
On one of those cloudy days I had plenty of time, as the weather was not inviting to go to the mountains, so I started trying to make noodles. I had the theory, 100 grams of flour for each egg, so all that was left was to make it concrete. As there was no one else in the hostel to share lunch with, this was just the amount I made. Afterwards I spent a lot of time stretching and stretching the dough with the stick, trying to keep it from breaking, but the ratio of ingredients was perfect so it was easy to manage.
Uno de esos días nublados tenía tiempo de sobra, ya que el clima no invitaba a ir a la montaña, así que me puse a intentar hacer fideos. La teoría la tenía, de 100 gramos de harina por cada huevo, así que solo quedaba concretarla. Como no había nadie más en el hostel para compartir el almuerzo, esta fue justo la cantidad que hice. Después me entretuve bastante estirando y estirando la masa con el palo, tratando de que no se rompiera, pero la proporción de los ingredientes era perfecta así que fue fácil de manejar.
As I was stretching, I remembered a technique for cutting the noodles, one of those tips you see on the reels and think you'll never use. It consisted of rolling the dough from both sides towards the centre and cutting the strips to the desired thickness. This technique worked very well, but you had to be careful not to flatten the dough during cutting.
Al momento de estirar, recordé una técnica para cortar los tallarines, de esos tips que ves en los reels y pensas que nunca vas a usar. Consistía en enrollar la masa de ambos lados hacia el centro y cortar las tiras del espesor deseado. Esta técnica funcionó muy bien, pero había que hacerla con cuidado de que no se aplastara la masa durante el corte.
As for the sauce, my past self had already made sure to have one ready and frozen to use at that moment when I didn't feel like peeling an onion. If there is one thing that is never missing in the freezer wherever I am, it is frozen sauce. I like gravy with meat, so I mix onion, garlic, pepper, carrot, seasoning and ground beef plus tomato puree to make a lot of it. This container of frozen sauce has lasted me for meals for over a month, and I only had to cook once.
Respecto a la salsa, mi yo del pasado ya se había encargado de tener una lista y congelada para usar en ese momento en el que ya no me quedaban ganas de pelar una cebolla. Si hay algo que nunca falta en el freezer de donde yo esté, es la salsa congelada. Me gusta la salsa con carne, así que mezclo cebolla, ajos, morrón, zanahoria, condimentos y carne molida más puré de tomate para que se haga bastante cantidad. Este contenedor de salsa congelada me ha durado para las comidas de más de un mes, y solo tuve que cocinar una vez.
Once everything was ready, this pasta and the sauce combined perfectly, but not before adding the final touch of grated cheese. The pasta tasted good, although I think that if the thickness of the dough had been even thinner, they would have tasted even better. Nevertheless, I ate it all. I'm always eating dry noodles, so having a fresh pasta was nice. I've never made this before and it was so easy to make, I said I'd make it again in the future (spoiler: it's been 6 months to the day and I still haven't made homemade noodles again).
Una vez que estuvo todo listo, esta pasta y la salsa combinaron perfectamente, no sin antes dar el toque final de queso rallado. La pasta tenía buen sabor, aunque creo que si el grosor de la masa hubiese sido aún menor, hubiesen quedado más ricos. Sin embargo, lo comí todo. Siempre estoy comiendo fideos secos, así que tener una pasta fresca estuvo bien. Nunca antes había hecho esto y resultó tan fácil de hacer, que dije que volvería a hacerlo en el futuro (spoiler: pasaron 6 meses de este día y todavía no volví a hacer tallarines caseros).
In conclusion, accepting that I like to cook but not all the time changed my perspective on my relationship with cooking. I now think that I like to save myself for special dishes, which when I cook them with gusto, they turn out well. Hopefully I'll be able to repeat these noodles one day, although I'll be sure to stretch them more next time. It must be very difficult for this recipe to go wrong because there is no margin for error, but until everything is served and ready to try, you never know 😂.
En conclusión, aceptar que me gusta cocinar pero no todo el tiempo cambió mi perspectiva de mi relación con la cocina. Ahora pienso en que me gusta guardarme para platos especiales, que cuando los cocino con ganas, me quedan bien. Ojalá pueda repetir estos fideos algún día, aunque me voy a asegurar de estirarlos más la próxima vez. Debe ser muy difícil que esta receta salga mal porque no hay margen de error, pero hasta que no está todo servido y listo para probar, uno nunca sabe 😂.
