Un saludo fraterno a mi querida comunidad cubana, un tiempo sin pasar por acá y compartirles mis vivencias cotidianas de las cosas a fines que nos unen como hermanos.
Resulta que ayer me incorporé a trabajar después de unos días fuera por diversos motivos, y me encontré con la grata sorpresa de que estábamos celebrando un evento que conmemoraba el 38 aniversario de la creación de la ACTAF (Agrupacion cubana de técnicos agrícolas y forestales) y el 60 aniversario de la creación de los Institutos de investigaciones de suelos y fertilizantes en el país.
A fraternal greeting to my beloved Cuban community, a time without passing by here and sharing my daily experiences of the things that unite us as brothers.
It turns out that yesterday I went to work after a few days away for various reasons, and I was pleasantly surprised that we were celebrating an event that commemorated the 38th anniversary of the creation of the ACTAF (Cuban Association of Agricultural and Forestry Technicians) and the 60th anniversary of the creation of the Soil and Fertilizer Research Institutes in the country.
En verdad quedé sorprendida porque por vez primera reuníamos a dos organismos que persiguen los mismos objetivos a pesar de toda la problemática alimentaria que enfrenta el país.
Debo confesarles que soy una agrónoma de "laboratorio y oficinas", mucha técnica analítica y estudios estadísticos vinculados al mejoramiento de los suelos y al incremento de la producción de alimentos...pero, sin todo ese teque romántico es justo decir que me entristece el abandono por parte de nuestras instancias superiores que no nos permiten enlazarnos directamente con los campesinos que más necesitan de nuestros servicios.
Por eso, más que nada me impresionó la iniciativa de este año porque los principales invitados fueron productores comunitarios que con el uso de técnicas artesanales y casi rudimentarias han logrado un hermoso trabajo en sus parcelas.
I was truly surprised because for the first time we brought together two organizations that pursue the same objectives despite all the food problems facing the country.
I must confess that I am a "laboratorie and office" agronomist, with a lot of analytical technique and statistical studies linked to the improvement of soils and the increase in food production... but, without all that romanticism, it is fair to say that I am saddened by the abandonment by our higher authorities who do not allow us to connect directly with the farmers who most need our services.
For this reason, more than anything I was impressed by this year's initiative because the main guests were community producers who, with the use of artisanal and almost rudimentary techniques, have achieved beautiful work on their plots.
Un ejemplo de ello fue la pregunta que le realizamos a uno de ellos para comprobar cómo lograba el control de plagas y enfermedades sin tener los medios para comprar productos super caros para ello, y la respuesta muy sabia fue que lo hacían con el cultivo de la caña santa.
Resulta que está planta tiene múltiples usos, primero para fines medicinales y, segundo, como repelente de trips y otras plagas asiduas al ataque de algunas especies de cultivos ...incluso, se emplea como barrera viva para evitar los escurrimientos superficiales y perdidas de suelos en lugares con pendientes significativas.
An example of this was the question we asked one of them to see how they managed to control pests and diseases without having the means to buy super expensive products for it, and the very wise answer was that they did it with the cultivation of holy cane.
It turns out that this plant has multiple uses, first for medicinal purposes and, second, as a repellent for thrips and other pests that frequently attack some crop species...it is even used as a living barrier to prevent surface runoff and soil loss in places with significant slopes.
No te quiero aburrir con ello, pero de la misma experiencia de los campesinos se aprende tanto que da gusto oírlos hablar sobre sus vivencias que nos aportan interesantes formas de cultivar sin muchos recursos inexistentes y caros.
De lo que sí estoy clara es que hay mucha gente que le gusta el campo, y en un patio pequeño son capaces de realizar magias llenas de sudor, sacrificio, y esfuerzo para poner un plato de amor y vida en tu mesa.
De más está decir que intercambiamos y platicamos entre todos, nuestra exposición fue muy bien acogida, porque brindamos alternativas para proteger la salud de vida de sus suelos y las grandes posibilidades de ayudarles a través de programas de ayuda monetarios que se les proporcionan para que establezcan medidas que favorezcan la protección de su principal medio de supervivencia : los suelos.
I don't want to bore you with it, but we learn so much from the farmers' own experience that it is a pleasure to hear them talk about their experiences that give us interesting ways to farm without many non-existent and expensive resources.
What I am clear about is that there are many people who like the countryside, and in a small patio they are capable of performing magic full of sweat, sacrifice, and effort to put a plate of love and life on your table. Needless to say, we exchanged and talked among all of us, our presentation was very well received, because we provided alternatives to protect the vital health of their soils and the great possibilities of helping them through monetary aid programs that are provided to them to establish measures that favor the protection of their main means of survival: the soils.
Una de las motivaciones más lindas es que finalmente estamos desarrollando la agricultura orgánica, desde los espacios más pequeños hasta los productores con mayores extensiones de tierra.
Culturalmente es un gran paso de avance y de motivación pues nada es comparable con poder disponer de una alimentación sana y libre de componentes que pueden afectar tu sistema inmunológico y traer graves consecuencias a la población como el excesivo uso de fertilizantes nitrogenados, que por su acción residual ácida pueden llegar a contaminar mantos acuíferos, y traen consigo enfermedades tales como leucemias y graves casos de envenenamientos en ciertas poblaciones ubicadas en áreas de monocultivos que exceden normas de consumo de químicos peligrosos.
One of the most beautiful motivations is that we are finally developing organic agriculture, from the smallest spaces to the producers with the largest areas of land. Culturally, it is a great step forward and motivation because nothing is comparable to being able to have a healthy diet free of components that can affect your immune system and have serious consequences for the population such as the excessive use of nitrogen fertilizers, which due to their residual acid action can contaminate aquifers, and bring with them diseases such as leukemia and serious cases of poisonings in certain populations located in monoculture areas that exceed norms of consumption of dangerous chemicals.
Así es que tenemos varios caminos en aras de establecer una alimentación adecuada para todos, primero interés de realizar un trabajo duro por parte de la gente del campo, interés por parte de los estados que mantengan su apoyo, y por último, aprender a amar el fruto de nuestro trabajo.
Pero a mí no me hagas mucho caso, recuerda que yo solo soy una pionera aprendiz de los que sí saben hacer y querer para los demás: los campesinos.
So we have several paths in order to establish adequate nutrition for everyone, first interest in doing hard work on the part of rural people, interest on the part of the states that maintain their support, and finally, learning to love the fruit of our work.
But don't pay too much attention to me, remember that I am just a pioneer apprentice of those who do know how to do and love for others: the farmers.
Solo puedo decir que fue una experiencia muy bonita y gratificante, y sin querer me tocó improvisar ante ellos cómo podíamos unir nuestra ciencia y sus técnicas para beneficio de todos.
Para nosotros los cubanos es una bendición, en estos cortos meses del año disponer en nuestras mesas de gran variedad de vegetales...tal vez sí pudiéramos invertir en casas de cultivo tuviéramos la dicha de disfrutar todo el año de un poco más de estos alimentos, pero: quién da más, a quién le interesará, a quién le importará....: A MÍ, Y A TODOS POR SUPESTO.
AMOR Y PAZ...y ojalá podamos un día unirnos para obtener el alimento sano para todos los humanos, porque hay tanta buena tierra desperdiciada por ahí que bien vale la pena cultivar.
I can only say that it was a very beautiful and rewarding experience, and without wanting to, I had to improvise before them how we could unite our science and its techniques for the benefit of all.
For us Cubans it is a blessing, in these short months of the year to have a great variety of vegetables on our tables...perhaps if we could invest in growing houses we would have the joy of enjoying a little more of these foods all year round, but: who gives more, who will be interested, who will care...: TO ME, AND TO EVERYONE OF COURSE.
LOVE AND PEACE...and I hope one day we can unite to obtain healthy food for all humans, because there is so much good land wasted out there that is well worth cultivating.
