ES/EN Un poquito de nostalgia/A bit nostalgic

Hola Hivers!!!

Empiezo a escribir estas palabras un domingo por la tarde, además está gris y amenaza lluvia… el clima frío se mezcla con mi humor, que ya de por sí estaba triste hoy 😔, porque los domingos son difíciles. Con algunos de ustedes he tenido la oportunidad de hablar en Qué Riquera, el mejor canal de Discord, pasen por allí si no lo han hecho ya. Algunos ya saben que soy una de las tantas cubanas emigradas y para mí la emigración es reciente, vine a vivir a México a inicios de febrero de este 2023.
Las razones para migrar son diferentes para todos, es muy complejo decir solo una, pero simplifiquemos diciendo que vine a este país a dedicarme a tiempo completo a hacer mi doctorado 👩‍🎓. Aunque el proceso está lleno de momentos felices cuando se alcanzan los objetivos, hay días como hoy, en los que la nostalgia nos da un golpe fuerte en el pecho.

Hace unos días @gornat decía que extrañaba la naturaleza y yo me sumo a eso. Extraño los tonos de verde de la isla 💚, es difícil explicar por qué extraño eso, aquí las plantas también son verdes al fin y al cabo. Extraño las flores del framboyán desparramadas en las aceras, extraño terriblemente las inoportunas palomas que cantaban en la almendra a la que daba mi ventana de un cuarto piso en Aldabó.
Extraño mi casa 🏠… la historia que tiene cada una de las cosas que la llenan, los sillones que fuimos a comprar a un barrio en el que nunca habíamos estado y que nos costó Dios y ayuda traer a casa, porque fuimos sin transporte; la lavadora que subieron los amigos que ayudaron en la mudanza en plena pandemia (a quién se le ocurre mudarse para La Habana en plena pandemia? 🤦‍♀). Extraño a los amigos (no solo a los de la mudanza), que andan ahora regados por el mundo y con los que adoraría volverme a encontrar una tarde cualquiera para matarnos a mentiras, como siempre. Extraño a mi familia y para esto no tengo más palabras.

Estas son las cosas que siempre sospeché que iba a extrañar, porque son mi núcleo como persona, mi cotidianidad. Lo que me ha sorprendido son las pequeñas cosas, esas que te hacen decir “Contra, de verdad estoy extrañando esto?”.
Puede parecer sorprendente que estando en un país de habla hispana les diga que extraño hablar “cubano” 😳. Nuestros códigos de comunicación (como los de cualquier otro país, supongo) son únicos, las palabras tienen un significado común y conocido para todos y generalmente no valoramos eso hasta que no estamos en casa. Por esta razón casi siempre buscamos otros cubanos con los que hablar, y acentuamos ciertas palabras y reforzamos la cadencia del “asere” que jamás en mi vida habia dicho mientras vivía en la isla (será una manera de aferrarme a algo que es solo nuestro?).

Extraño que en los lugares públicos esté sonando nuestra música 🎶 y que haya siempre alguien moviéndose a ese ritmo, y hasta tú te mueves un poquito. A veces he estado en un mercado y de la nada suena una canción cubana y pienso “Contra!! Eso es mío!!”, pero no hay nadie bailando ni un poquito. Extraño los pregones, ¡sí! Esos que son pegajosos, pícaros, musicales y te ofrecen “lechugas anti-arrugas” o la “raspadura de guarapo, batida con ajonjolí, qué ricas están, yo me las comiera todas” (si leyeron este último cantando es porque son sapingos de la Trovuntivitis).

Extraño la yuca blandita, y este parece ser un trauma de todos los cubanos que he conocido en la Ciudad de México, cada vez que nos encontramos a un cubano surge el tema ‘’dónde encuentro yucas que se ablanden?”. Extraño la calabaza amarilla y cremosa, las guayabas rojas, para hacer casquitos o comerlas “pintonas”, ustedes saben: ni maduras ni verdes. Extraño los aguacates con mucha masa y sé que me estoy perdiendo la temporada de mangos, que es mi preferida. Extraño el ají cachucha, porque los frijoles no saben igual.

Toda la nostalgia que sientes busca su manera de salir, en mi caso ha salido así, en palabras que no alcanzan a expresar por completo cuánto extraño a Cuba y a su gente. Sé que hay otras maneras, pero a veces intoxican al que la expresa y al que las lee. Algunos tomamos la decisión de partir (por la razón que sea) y eso no significa que no podamos extrañar lo que dejamos. Los que han decidido quedarse tienen mi respeto y solo los exhorto a que disfruten las pequeñas y simples cosas, la vida da muchas vueltas.

I start writing these words on a Sunday afternoon, plus it's gray and threatening rain... the cold weather mixes with my mood, which was already sad today 😔, because Sundays are rough. With some of you I've had the opportunity to talk on Qué Riquera, the best Discord channel, drop by there if you haven't already. Some of you may know that I am one of the many Cuban emigrants and for me emigration is recent, I came to live in Mexico at the beginning of February of this year 2023.
The reasons for migrating are different for everyone, it is very complex to say just one, but let's simplify it by saying that I came to this country to dedicate myself full time to do my PhD 👩‍🎓. Although the process is full of happy moments when goals are achieved, there are days like today, when nostalgia hits us hard in the chest.

A few days ago @gornat was saying he missed nature and I'll add to that. I miss the shades of green on the island 💚, it's hard to explain why I miss that, here the plants are green too after all. I miss the framboyan flowers scattered on the sidewalks, I miss terribly the unwelcome pigeons singing in the almond tree to which my fourth floor window in Aldabó overlooked.
I miss my house 🏠... the history of each of the things that fill it, the armchairs that we went to buy in a neighborhood we had never been to and that it cost us a lot to bring home, because we went without transportation; the washing machine that my friends helped us move in the middle of a pandemic (who would think of moving to Havana in the middle of a pandemic? 🤦‍♀). I miss my friends (not only those who helped in the move), who are now scattered around the world and with whom I would love to meet again one afternoon to tell each other everything, as always. I miss my family and for this I have no more words.

These are the things I always suspected I would miss, because they are my core as a person, my everyday life. What has surprised me are the little things, those things that make you say "Woww, am I really missing this?".
It may seem surprising that being in a Spanish speaking country I tell you that I miss speaking "Cuban" 😳. Our communication codes (like those of any other country, I guess) are unique, words have a common and known meaning to everyone and we usually don't value that until we are not at home. For this reason we almost always look for other Cubans to talk to, and we emphasize certain words and reinforce the rhythm of "asere" that I had never in my life said while living on the island (it will be a way to hold on to something that is ours alone?).

I miss that in public places our music is playing 🎶 and that there is always someone moving to that rhythm, and even you move a little bit. Sometimes I've been in a market and out of nowhere a Cuban song comes on and I think "Hey! That's mine!", but there's no one dancing even a little bit. I miss the pregones, yes! Those that are catchy, cheeky, musical and offer you "anti-wrinkle lettuce" or the "raspadura de guarapo, batida con ajonjolí, qué ricas están, yo me comiera las todas" (if you read this last one singing it is because they are Trovuntivitis sapingos).

I miss the tender yucca, and this seems to be a trauma of all the Cubans I have met in Mexico City, every time we meet a Cuban the topic "where can I find cassava " comes up. I miss the yellow and creamy squash, the red guavas, to make casquitos or eat them "pintonas", you know: neither ripe nor green. I miss the avocados with a lot of flesh and I know I'm missing the mango season, which is my favorite. I miss the cachucha bell pepper, because beans don't taste the same without it.

All the nostalgia you feel looks for a way to come out, in my case it has come out this way, in words that do not fully express how much I miss Cuba and its people. I know there are other ways, but sometimes they intoxicate the one who expresses it and the one who reads them. Some of us made the decision to leave (for whatever reason) and that does not mean that we cannot miss what we left. Those who have decided to stay have my respect and I only urge them to enjoy the small and simple things, life takes many turns.
