When you have two vehicles you should always make the effort to save money when doing maintenance or repairs, of course without sacrificing quality and durability. In my case I have two Chery brand vehicles, an Arauca and an X1. This brand became very popular in my country more than 10 years ago, due to the low prices of its vehicles, and despite being Chinese, they are quite good.
Cuando tienes dos vehículos siempre debes hacer el esfuerzo por ahorrar dinero al momento de hacer mantenimiento o reparaciones, claro que sin sacrificar la calidad y durabilidad. En mi caso tengo dos vehículos de la Marca Chery un Arauca y un X1. Esta marca se hizo muy popular en mi país hace mas de 10 años, por los bajos precios de sus vehículos, y a pesar de ser chinos, son bastante buenos.
I chose to have two vehicles of this brand because I know their mechanics, besides that for a time I dedicated myself to marketing their spare parts, leaving many contacts that facilitate the purchase process when I need to make a repair, however, maintaining two vehicles is not easy and even more so in times of pandemic where many economic activities have been affected.
Escogí tener dos vehículos de esta marca porque conozco su mecánica, además que por un tiempo me dedique a comercializar sus repuestos, quedándome muchos contactos que me facilitan el proceso de compra cuando necesito hacer alguna reparación, sin embargo, mantener dos vehículos no es sencillo y mas aun en tiempo de pandemia donde muchas actividades económicas se han visto afectadas.
For this reason I am always devising ways to economize when making small repairs, as long as I don't sacrifice too much durability and quality, because the parts market in my country has been filled with many imitations of spare parts, of all brands of vehicles, which imitate the originals very well and only a connoisseur could realize which is the imitation.
Por esta razón siempre estoy ideando maneras de economizar a la hora de hacer pequeñas reparaciones, siempre y cuando no sacrifique demasiado la durabilidad y calidad, porque el mercado de repuestos en mi país se ha llenado de muchas imitaciones de repuestos, de todas las marcas de vehículos, que imitan muy bien las originales y solo un conocedor podría darse cuenta de cual es la imitacion.
The problem
In my country the rainy season lasts approximately 6 months, and for me it's always important that both cars have everything in order to be able to circulate without problems in the rain. For this I make sure that first, the air conditioning must work well so that the windows don't fog up when closing them and have good visibility. Second, all the door rubbers are in good condition, so that water doesn't penetrate the interior and the carpets get wet, and third, that the windshield wipers are in good condition.
En mi país la época de lluvia dura 6 meses aproximadamente, y para mi siempre es importante que ambos carros tengan todo en orden para poder circular sin problemas en medio de lluvia. Para ello me aseguro que primero, el aire acondicionado debe funcionar bien para que los vidrios no se empañen al momento de cerrarlos y tenga buena visibilidad. Segundo, todas las gomas de las puertas estén en buenas condiciones, para que el agua no penetre al interior y las alfombras se humedezcan, y tercero, que los limpia vidrios estén en buen estado.
After doing this check, because the rainy season is approaching, I noticed that the rear Windshield wipers of both vehicles were severely damaged by the effect of the sun. They had completely lost the rubber that sweeps the water.
Luego de hacer esta revisión, porque se aproxima ya la temporada de lluvia, note que los limpia vidrios traseros de ambos vehículos estaban severamente deteriorados por el efecto del sol. Habían perdido por completo la goma que barre el agua.
So I started looking for prices to replace both, which are original, and I found it for a cost of $ 15 USD. I started looking for generics of the same size, in order to compare prices, and to my surprise, generics were only available from 16 ”, twice the size.
Así que me dispuse a buscar precios para reemplazar ambos, que sean originales, y lo encontré por un costo de 15$ USD. Empecé a buscar genéricos del mismo tamaño, con el propósito de comparar precios, y para mi sorpresa, genéricos solo se encontraban a partir de 16”, el doble del tamaño.
At that moment an idea came to me, in the middle of the search, when I observed that the price of 16 ”generics was only $ 1.7, it occurred to me that I could remove the rubber that serves as a brush, chop it and adjust it to the size of the wipers in my vehicles and thus replace them at a low cost.
En ese momento me vino una idea, en medio de la búsqueda, al observar que el precio de los genéricos de 16” era solo de 1,7 $, se me ocurrió que podría sacar la goma que sirve de cepillo, picarla y ajustarla al tamaño de los wipers de mis vehículos y así reemplazarlos a un bajo costo.
The process
Removing the rubber from the wiper is quite simple, just make a small effort at one end of the wiper, to remove the fasteners that are inserted in a kind of channels in the rubber. Just be careful not to break the fasteners. Then you just have to pull the rubber until it's completely out.
Retirar la goma de los wiper es bastante sencillo, basta con solo hacer un pequeño esfuerzo en uno de los extremos del wiper, para sacar los sujetadores que están introducidos en una especie de canales de la goma. Solo se debe tener cuidado de no quebrar los sujetadores. Después solo se debe jalar la goma hasta que esté completamente afuera.

So it was with both cars, in reality it is quite simple, you just have to be careful not to use too much force on the fasteners, you have to force it on the rubber.
Así fue con ambos carros, en realidad es bastante sencillo, solo se debe tener cuidado de no hacer mucha fuerza en los sujetadores, hay que hacer la fuerza es en la goma.

After removing both rubbers, I measure them against the 16” wiper I bought. Removing the rubbers from the 16” wiper is the same way as the others, at one end first and then slides, to be able to cut to the size of the smaller wipers.
Luego de retirar ambas gomas, las mido en comparación con el wiper de 16” que compre. Retirar las gomas del wiper de 16” es de la misma forma que los otros, por un extremo primero y luego se desliza, para poder picar a la medida de los wiper más pequeños.
Once we make sure that the rubber fits in the wipers of both cars, I proceed to place them, starting at the end, and sliding it little by little through the channels of the rubber, until reaching the end, and then chopping it.
Una vez que nos aseguramos que la goma calza en los wiper de ambos carros, procedo a colocarlas, empezando por el extremo, y deslizándola poco a poco por los canales de la goma, hasta llegar al final, para luego picarla.
Now the process is ready in both cars, it only remained to test them, and here are a couple of gifs that show how the cleaning of both wipers improves with the new tires.
Ya listo el proceso en ambos carros, solo quedaba probarlos, y aquí les dejo un par de gifs que muestran como mejora la limpieza de ambos wipers con las gomas nuevas.
