In my last publication I was reporting what was the damage to the glass lifting mechanism of the right rear door of my vehicle, product of a new theft attempt. I told that in the past I had a similar experience and that I was able to repair the damage without the need to buy new parts; I thought that this time the damage would be the same, but the plastic gear was damaged, losing several of its teeth.

En mi pasada publicación estube relatando lo que fueron los daños a el mecanismo eleva vidrio de la puerta trasera derecha de mi vehículo, producto de un nuevo intento de robo. Contaba que en el pasado tuve una experiencia similar y que me fue posible reparar los daños sin necesidad de comprar piezas nuevas; pense que en esta ocasión el daños sería el mismo, pero resultó dañado el engranaje plastico perdiendo varios de sus dientes.

I commented at the end of my previous publication that in the following days, I would be making attempts to repair the gear, thanks to a video I watched on networks in which with a kerosene mold, they emptied what looked like resin or acrylic to mold new teeth to a gear. After analyzing it I noticed that I had everything I needed to try it, so I decided to try it and here I tell you the process and result.

Comentaba al final de mi publicación anterior que en los días siguientes, estaria haciendo los intentos por reparar el engranaje, gracias a un video que observe en redes en el que con un molde de parafina, vaciaban lo que parecía resina o acrílico para moldear nuevos dientes a un engranaje. Luego de analizarlo note que contaba con todo lo necesario para intentarlo, así que me dispuse a probar y aquí les cuento el proceso y resultado.

Cleaning the area and anchoring elements

The first thing I did was with the help of a dremel to remove the remains of the broken teeth, after finishing the work I realized that it was not necessary, because only the upper part of the teeth was the one that broke, so I could make a partial and not a complete acrylic casting.

Lo primero que hice fue con la ayuda de un dremel retirar los restos de los dientes partidos, luego de haber terminado el trabajo me di cuenta que no era del todo necesario, porque solo la parte superior del los dientes fue la que se partio, asi que podia realizar un vaciado de acrilico parcial y no completo.

It is a matter of analyzing the damage very well and knowing the complete process, everything depends on the damage and it is not necessary to remove the remains of broken teeth, but it is necessary to drill the base so that the acrylic penetrates the piece and holds better.

Es cuestión de analizar muy bien los daños y conocer el proceso completo, todo depende de los daños y no es necesario retirar los restos de dientes rotos, pero si es necesario perforar la base para que el acrílico penetre la pieza y se sujete mejor.

A suitable mold to work with paraffin

At this point I took a good learning, after trying several materials, I stopped to investigate what is the boiling point of paraffin according to its density, because empirically as I was doing, placing various plastic materials as retainers for paraffin , all melted on contact, finally I found the right one that withstood up to 100 degrees Celsius.

En este punto me lleve un buen aprendizaje, luego de probar con varios materiales, me detuve a investigar cual es el punto de ebullición de la parafina de acuerdo a su densidad, porque empíricamente como lo estaba haciendo, colocando varios materiales plásticos como retenes para la parafina, todos se derretían al entrar en contacto, finalmente encontré el adecuado que soportaba hasta 100 grados Celsius.

The paraffin is the material I used to create the mold for the new gear teeth, I learned that according to its density in solid state that can reach 0.9 g/cm3 and when subjected to at least 80 degrees Celsius it goes to its liquid form with a density of 0.8 g/cm3, and can sustain such temperature even returning to its solid state for a while, for this reason some plastic materials that I used as retainer yielded.

La parafina es el material que utilice para crear el molde para los nuevos dientes del engranaje, aprendí que según su densidad en estado sólido que puede alcanzar los 0.9 g/cm3 y al someterla a mínimo 80 grados celsius pasa a su forma líquida con una densidad de 0.8 g/cm3, y puede sostener tal temperatura aun regresando a su estado sólido por un tiempo, por esta razón algunos materiales plásticos que use como retén cedían.

Close all the holes tightly

The paraffin in its liquid state can reach any part of the mold very well, that is why it is necessary to close all the holes well, I learned this after several attempts, where it spilled and the mold did not contain it. With the help of plasticine I was able to close the holes and cracks so that it would not come out of the mold and then I could remove it without problems.

La parafina en su estado líquido puede alcanzar muy bien cualquier parte del molde, por eso hay que cerrar bien todos los orificios, esto lo aprendí luego de varios intentos, donde se derramó y el molde no la contuvo. Con la ayuda de plastilina pude cerrar los orificios y grietas para que no se saliera del molde y luego poder retirarla sin problemas.

Once dry, removing the new kerosene mold is quite a process, but with great care and patience it is possible.

Colocar el molde de parafina en el espacio sin dientes

Una vez seco, retirar el nuevo molde de parafina es todo un proceso, pero con mucho cuidado y paciencia es posible.

Once the paraffin mold has been removed, it can be seen that the teeth were very well, so I can conclude that it is a good method to create a casting mold.

Ya una vez retirado el molde de parafina, se puede observar que los dientes quedaron muy bien, así que puedo concluir que es un buen método para crear un molde de vaciado.

The next step is to place it in the space where we want to rebuild the new teeth, we must be careful when placing the kerosene piece depending on the thickness and proximity of the teeth, in my case they are thin and very close, that makes them fragile in the mold, so doing it slowly and carefully was the most important thing, but it was achieved and it was in position.

Lo siguiente es colocarlo en el espacio donde deseamos reconstruir los nuevos dientes, debemos tener cuidado al colocar la pieza de parafina dependiendo del espesor y proximidad de los dientes, en mi caso son finos y muy cercanos, eso los hace frágiles en el molde, así que hacerlo con lentitud y cuidado fue lo mas importante, pero se logro y quedo en posicion.

Placing acrylic

Thanks to the fact that my wife uses acrylic to make false nails, I have access to this material. With her help, I was able to determine the amounts of acrylic powder and monomer needed to be liquid enough to penetrate through the kerosene mold.

Gracias a que mi esposa utiliza acrilico para hacer uñas postizas, tengo acceso a este material, con su ayuda, pude determinar las cantidades de acrílico en polvo y monomero necesarios para que fueran lo suficientemente líquido y penetrara a través del molde de parafina.

After placing what I thought was enough, I let it dry for more than 1 hour and then I started to remove the paraffin mold. To my surprise the upper part was very good, the teeth have the necessary shape without imperfections.

Luego de colocar lo que creí era suficiente, lo deje secar por mas de 1 hora y luego me dispuse a retirar el molde de parafina. Para mi sorpresa la parte superior quedó muy bien, los dientes tiene la forma necesaria sin imperfecciones.

The lower part unfortunately didn't fill well with the acrylic, I suspect it started to harden quickly and didn't let the rest through, but I can say that it is hard enough to withstand the workload that the motor gear of the glass lifting system subjects it to.

La parte inferior lamentablemente no se relleno bien con el acrílico, sospecho que se empezó a endurecer rápidamente y no dejó pasar el resto, pero puedo decir que tiene la dureza suficiente como para soportar la carga de trabajo a la que le somete el engranaje del motor del sistema eleva vidrio.

In conclusion I can say that it is a partial success story, I learned several things that will help me to repeat the process faster and with more success, so I will return to make a new mold just to place the teeth that were incomplete, and I hope soon to bring you the publication where I show that the piece is mounted and the glass goes up and down without problems.

En conclusion puede decir que es una historia de éxito parcial, aprendí varias cosas que me ayudaran a repetir el proceso mas rápido y con mas aciertos, por eso volvere hacer un nuevo molde solo para colocar los dientes que quedaron incompletos, y espero pronto traerles la publicación donde muestro que la pieza es montada y el vidrio sube y baja sin problemas.
