Hello mechanic friends, it is a pleasure to join the initiative to share two experiences, but this time from the perspective of a customer, perhaps if you have read some of my previous publications you will know that I am not a mechanic, in fact, I am an electronic engineer by profession, but I like to do everything possible to self-manage many of the repairs of my vehicle, in order to save some money, however, sometimes for time or tools that I don't have, I take my car to the mechanic.
Que tal amigos mecánicos, por caca me sumo a la iniciativa de compartir dos experiencias, pero desde la perspectiva de un cliente, quizás sí han leído alguna de mis publicaciones anteriores sabrán que no soy mecánico, de hecho, soy ingeniero electrónico de profesión, pero me gusta hacer todo lo posible por autogestionar muchas de las reparaciones de mi vehículo, con el fin de poder ahorrar algún dinero, sin embargo, en ocasiones por tiempo o herramientas llevo mi carro al mecánico.
If you do not know, my car is a Chery A1 better known in my country as Arauca, is a small car with a 4-cylinder engine, 1.3 liters, Hatchback model year 2012. It is a car that despite its years is quite reliable, fuel efficient and economical when it comes to buying auto parts to be repaired. It is obvious that there are better options in the market, but for those who don't know, the Venezuelan vehicle market hasn't received new models of any brand for several years, there are few of them, but imported, so the vehicle fleet is somewhat obsolete.
Si no lo sabes, mi carro es un Chery A1 mejor conocido en mi país como Arauca, es un carro pequeño con un motor 4 cilindro 1.3 modelo Hatchback del año 2012. Es un carro que a pesar de sus años es bastante confiable, ahorrador de combustible y económico cuando se trata de comprar sus autopartes para ser reparado. Es obvio que hay mejores opciones en el mercado, pero para quienes no lo saben, el mercado venezolano de vehículos, no recibe nuevos modelos de cualquier marca desde hace varios años, son pocos lo que hay, pero de importación, así que el parque automotor es un tanto obsoleto.
However, those of us who have cars in Venezuela strive to keep our vehicles in good condition, because we will not be able to buy a new car 2022 or 2023, so it is customary to take our cars to the mechanic, and fortunately for me there are many mechanics specialized in Chery, because when the assembly plant of this brand closed together with the dealerships, the mechanics had to work on their own, of course it is sometimes a lottery to find someone who is really good at mechanics, combined with a good customer service and honesty.
Sin embargo, quienes tenemos carro en Venezuela nos esforzamos por mantener nuestros vehículos al día, porque un carro nuevo 2022 o 2023 no podremos comprar, así que es costumbre llevar nuestros carros al mecánico, y para mi fortuna mecánicos especializados en Chery hay muchos, porque al cerrar la ensambladora de esta marca junto a los concesionarios, los mecánicos tuvieron que trabajar por su cuenta, claro que es una lotería en ocasiones encontrar quien realmente es bueno trabajando la mecánica, combinado con un buen trato al cliente y que sea honesto.
An unsolicited adjustment ended in major damage | The overconfident mechanic
Recently for work reasons I didn't have the time to make a minor repair, I had to change the hose that goes from the hydraulic pump to the steering box, because it had a leak and the oil was falling on the belts of the alternator and the steering pump, starting to deteriorate them, therefore, it was necessary not only to change the hose but also the belts. So I bought everything I needed and at the end of the afternoon I left the car to the mechanic so that the next day he would work early and I could pass it looking for it after I came back from work.
Un ajuste no solicitado finalizo en un daño mayor
Hace poco por asuntos de trabajo no disponía del tiempo para hacer una reparación menor, se trataba de cambiar la maguera que va desde la bomba hidráulica hasta el cajetín de la dirección, debido a que tenía una fuga y el aceite estaba cayendo sobre las correas del alternado y la bomba de dirección, comenzado a deteriorarlas, por lo tanto, fue necesario no solo cambiar la manguera si no también las correas. Así que compre todo lo necesario y al finalizar la tarde le deje el carro al mecánico para que al día siguiente trabajara temprano y poder pasarlo buscando luego de yo regresar de trabajar.
The next day when I go to pick up the car the mechanic shows me the work done and everything was in order, I give him the money for the payment for the work and I get ready to leave. When I get in the car and step on the clutch pedal to put it in gear, it was higher than it should have been, and it was moving sideways, but I still applied the gear, although with difficulty. He told me that when he went to turn it on and stepped on the clutch, the bushings that holds the pedal in position broke, but that it wasn't his fault.
Al día siguiente cuando voy por el carro el mecánico me muestra el trabajo hecho y todo estaba en orden, le entrego el dinero del pago por el trabajo y me dispongo a retirarme. Cuando me subo y piso el pedal del embrague para colocar la velocidad, este estaba mas arriba de lo que lo tenía, y de paso se movía hacia los lados, pero igual aplicaba la velocidad, aunque con dificultad. De inmediato me bajo y converso con el mecánico que había pasado, el me dijo que cuando fue a prenderlo y piso el embrague la arandela que mantiene en posición el pedal se rompió, pero que no era su culpa.
I told him that it wasn't possible, that surely he had adjusted the clutch pedal to activate it higher and in the new position, when it was necessary to press it with more force, he damaged it. I showed him that he had made that adjustment without me telling him, I got under the car and took a picture of the nut of the cable that drives the clutch, where it was clearly seen that it had been moved, so he had to admit that he damaged it, most likely he wanted to use the car for some errand, since he has no car, and as I was coming for the car in the afternoon, I gave him time to do it, but he ended up damaging the pedal bushings that he did not want to repair.
Le dije que no era posible, que seguro se puso a ajustar el pedal del embrague para que se activara mas arriba y en la nueva posición al ser necesario pisarlo con mas fuerza lo daño. Le demostré que él había hecho ese ajuste sin yo decirle, me coloque por debajo del carro y tome la foto a la tuerca de la guaya, donde se apreciaba claramente que había sido movida, así que debía admitir que el lo daño, lo más seguro que quiso utilizar el carro para alguna diligencia, ya que el no tiene, y como yo venia por el carro en la tarde, le daba tiempo para hacerlo, pero termino dañando la bocina del pedal que nunca me reconoció.
A mechanic with a good ear
Another experience, this time positive, was I went to have the front shock absorbers changed. An friend of my father's, who worked with him in the Chery assembly plant in our city, had started an enterprise with a workshop; among the tools and machines he had at his disposal was a lifting bridge, ideal to work the car from the bottom, which seems to me ideal not only to change the shock absorbers, but also to have a better view of the front axle and to be able to adjust it properly because in these cars it is necessary to do it every 5000 km.
Un mecánico con buen oído
Otra experiencia, esta vez positiva, se dio la vez que fui a que le cambiasen los amortiguadores delanteros al carro. Un conocido de mi padre, que trabajo con el en la planta ensambladora Chery en nuestra ciudad, había iniciado un emprendimiento con un taller; entre las herramientas y maquinas que dispuso fue un puente elevadizo, ideal para trabajar el carro por la parte de abajo, lo que me parece ideal no solo para cambiar los amortiguadores, también para tener una mejor visión del tren delantero y poder ajustarlo debidamente porque en estos carros es necesario hacerlo cada 5000 km.
As on the previous occasion I took the parts to him at the end of the afternoon and left the vehicle for him to work early the next day and then pick it up at the end of the afternoon after returning from work. To my surprise he told me that the car was not ready, well it was, according to the request I made him to change the front shocks and make the adjustments, but when he went out for a test drive, he heard a noise in one of the rear wheels, he told me that one of the rear axle bushings had a lot of wear and it was better to change it, he could rebuild it at no additional cost.
Como en la ocasión anterior le lleve los repuestos al final de la tarde y le deje el vehículo para que trabajara temprano al día siguiente y luego pasar por el al final de la tarde luego de volver de trabajar. Para mi sorpresa me indico que el carro no estaba listo, que si lo estuvo, según el requerimiento que le hice de cambiar los amortiguadores delanteros y hacer los ajustes, pero cuando salió a dar una vuelta de prueba, escucho un ruido en una de las ruedas traseras, me dijo que uno de los bujes del eje trasero tenia mucho desgaste y era mejor cambiarlo, que él podía reconstruirlo sin costo adicional.
I appreciated that he went beyond the requirements I made, that he evaluated the car completely and made the necessary repairs taking advantage of being able to work the car being elevated. Obviously I didn't accept that he didn't charge me for the additional repairs because he deserved a better payment, besides his work was impeccable and of very good quality, being committed to make other repairs in the future. It is not easy to find a good service in my city nowadays, for that reason I try to do many of my repairs, but finally I have found the mechanic I have confidence in
Agradecí que fuera más allá de los requerimientos que hice, que evaluara el carro por completo y se hicieran las reparaciones necesarias aprovechando poder trabajar el carro estando elevado. Obviamente no acepte que no me cobrara por las relaciones adicionales porque bien merecía un mejor pago, además que su trabajo fue impecable y de muy buena calidad, quedando comprometido con el realizar otras reparaciones en el futuro. No es fácil encontrar un buen servicio en mi ciudad hoy en día, por esa razón intento hacer muchas de mis reparaciones, pero por fin he conseguido un mecánico de confianza.
