Hi lovers of engines and repairs, today I will share with you my most recent experience trying to repair the horn of the vehicle, or as we say in my country cornet. It seems something simple, but it is something indispensable, because with the gasoline crisis in the country, more people are using bicycles or simply walking, and as there are not properly demarcated channels for circulation, the city is in chaos, and the use of the horn is essential.
Saludos amantes de los motores y las reparaciones, hoy compartiré con ustedes mi más reciente experiencia tratando de reparar el claxon del vehículo, o como le decimos en mi país corneta. Parece algo sencillo, pero es algo indispensable, porque con la crisis de la gasolina en el país, son mas las personas que están utilizando bicicletas o simplemente caminan, y al no haber canales debidamente demarcados para la circulación, la ciudad es un caos, y el uso del claxon es indispensable.
One day driving through the city, precisely using the horn to alert a cyclist who was approaching me, it did not work, I tried several times, but for no reason it did not sound anymore, I stopped, and turned the steering wheel in both directions pressing in the middle of the steering wheel to activate it, in order to know if it was due to a bad contact, but it still did not work.
Resulta que un día conduciendo por la ciudad, precisamente usando el claxon para alerta a un ciclista que me aproximaba, no funciono, lo intenten varias veces, pero sin razón alguna no sonó más, me detuve, y gire el volante en ambos sentidos pulsando en medio del volante para activarlo, con el propósito de descartar que fuese un mal contacto, pero igual no funciono.
As soon as I got home I got ready to check what had happened, the first thing was to remove the front grill that covers both horns of the vehicle, it is quite easy to remove it because only in the upper part it has plastic retainers, which consist of two parts, the first threaded and the second under pressure, and in the lower part some fasteners.
Apenas llegué a casa me dispuse a revisar que había ocurrido, lo primero fue retirar la parrilla delantera que cubre ambos cláxones del vehículo, es bastante sencillo retirarla porque solo en la parte superior tiene unos retener plásticos, que constan de dos partes, el primero roscado y el segundo a presión, y en la parte inferior unos sujetadores.
At first glance it is covered in rust, and for those who have read me in the past will know that I bought the vehicle from a woman who lives on the coast near the sea, for that reason many parts have suffered deterioration due to salt. I got ready to test and indeed 12 volts did not arrive at the time of activating the horn, but feed it directly and if it worked, and in this way rule out that it was defective.
A primera vista se ve que esta cubierta de oxido, y para quienes me han leído en el pasado sabrán, que el vehículo lo compre a una señora que viven en la costa cerca del mar, por esa razón muchas partes han sufrido deterioro por la sal. Me dispuse a probar y en efecto no llegaban 12 voltios al momento de activar el claxon, pero alimente directamente y si funciono, y de esta manera descarte que estuviera defectuoso.
I continued with the diagnosis to find the reason why it did not work, having already ruled out that both horns were fine when energized directly with 12V, so I decided to check the fuse. On the cover of the fuse holder you can find a sticker, which indicates that it protects each fuse, and what function each relay fulfills. The horn fuse supports 15 amps, and as you can see in the image, it is in good condition.
Continúe con el diagnostico para dar con la razón de porque no funcionaba, ya habiendo descartado que ambos cláxones estaban bien al energizarlos directamente con 12V, por eso decidí revisar el fusible. En la tapa de la fusilera se puede encontrar un sticker, que señala que protege cada fusible, y que función cumple cada relé. El fusible de los cláxones soporta 15 amperios, y como podrán notar en la imagen, se encuentra en buen estado.
The next step would be to check the contact that activates the horns on the steering wheel. Thanks to consulting the service manual, regarding the electrical parts of the vehicle, I learned that in order to do so, the first thing to do is disconnect the positive terminal of the battery, and wait a few minutes until the energy stored in all the components dissipates of the electrical system, this as a safety measure when disassembling the steering wheel, to avoid a possible accident with the air bag.
El siguiente paso seria revisar el contacto que acciona los cláxones en el volante. Gracias a consultar el manual de servicio, en lo respecta a las partes eléctricas del vehículo, aprendí que para poder hacerlo, lo primero es desconectar el borne positivo de la batería, y esperar unos minutos hasta que se disipe la energía almacenada en todos los componentes del sistema eléctrico, esto como medida de seguridad al desarmar el volante, para evitar un posible accidente con la bolsa de aire.
Two holes are covered on the sides of the steering wheel, in them is the head of the screws that hold the air bag, which in turn is the steering wheel cover, and a button that operates the horn. Both screws are star head. With the help of a small die and gust, I was able to remove both without problem, because if you do not have the correct tool, and force it with another, they can lose their shape and it would be impossible to remove them later.
A los lados del volante se encuentran cubiertos dos orificios, en ellos está la cabeza de los tornillos que sujetan la bolsa de aire, que a su vez es la tapa del volante, y botón que acciona el claxon. Ambos tornillos son cabeza de estrella. Con la ayuda de un pequeño dado y rache, pude retirar ambos sin problema, porque si no se tiene la herramienta correcta, y se fuerza con otra, pueden perder la forma y sería imposible luego sacarlos.

It cost a little to loosen both screws, I suppose that by the time they had without being loosened, I also realized that they are not completely removed, because they have a security system that keeps them attached to the steering wheel, and when loosening them they only release the cover.
Costo un poco aflojar ambos tornillos, supongo que por el tiempo que tenían sin ser desajustados, también me di cuenta que no se retiran por completo, porque cuentan con un sistema de seguridad que los mantiene acoplados al volante, y al aflojarlos sueltan la tapa solamente.
Upon careful inspection, I could notice that the terminal of the wire that makes a circuit with the metallic part of the steering wheel which in turn is the one that operates the horn, was loose. It looks quite deteriorated, so immediately look for the multimer to test continuity, and this would also serve to know what the integrity of the cable is. The continuity is fine, and the terminal is difficult to hold again when placed.
Al revisar con detenimiento, pude notar que el terminal del cable que hace circuito con la parte metaliza del volante que a su vez e la que acciona el claxon, estaba suelto. Se ve bastante deteriorado, así que inmediatamente busque el multímero para probar continuidad, y esto serviría para conocer también cual es la integridad del cable. La continuidad esta bien, y el terminal se sujeta con dificultad nuevamente al colocarlo.
I decided to connect the battery terminal again, to energize the circuit and know if the necessary voltage was reaching the steering wheel, and indeed 12V was reaching, and there was no other damage to the naked eye that would indicate the reason why it stopped working the Horn. This leads me to have to completely disassemble the steering wheel, at the suggestion of a friend who works in technical service for this brand of vehicles, he recommended that I review what is known as the clock spring or ribbon wire steering wheel.
Decidí conectar el borne de la batería nuevamente, para energizar el circuito y saber si estaba llegando el voltaje necesario hasta el volante, y en efecto llegaban los 12V, y no había ningún otro daño a simple vista que indicara la razón de porque dejo de funcionar el claxon. Esto me lleva a tener que desmontar por completo el volante, por sugerencia de un amigo que trabajo en servicio técnico de esta marca de vehículos, me dio por recomendación que revisara lo que se conoce como clock spring o ribbon wire steering Wheel.
However, it was not possible for me because I did not have the necessary tools at the time, due to how I commented in my previous publications, they were stolen from me. I hope later to review it in more detail and to be able to find the reason why the horn does not work, because it costs a lot to drive when you are used to using it always, even more so in this chaos of the city where I live.
Sin embargo, no me fue posible por no contar con las herramientas necesarias en el momento, debido a como les comenté en mis publicaciones anteriores me fueron robadas. Espero mas adelante poder revisarlo con mas detalles y poder dar con la razón de porque no funciona el claxon, porque cuesta mucho manejar cuando estas acostumbrado a utilizarlo siempre, mas aun en este caos de ciudad donde vivo.
