Veterinary health tip: QUIET (Engl / Spn)

Greetings and happy holidays. I hope this month brings you a lot of personal and spiritual growth, as well as great joy and health. December is a beautiful month, especially for Catholic people, as we commemorate the birth of the Son of God: Jesus. It is a season full of traditions, with special foods, decorations according to the festivity, and it is a time when many families meet again and share. That's great, but there is one aspect of December that I, in particular, don't like, in fact, I hate it, and that is the use of pyrotechnics or fireworks.

Saludos y felices fiestas. Deseo que este mes les traiga mucho crecimiento personal, espiritual, así como gran alegría y salud. Diciembre es un mes bello, especialmente para las personas católicas, ya que conmemoramos el nacimiento del Hijo de Dios: Jesús. Es una temporada plena de tradiciones, con comidas especiales, decoración de acuerdo a la festividad, y es un momento en que muchas familias se reencuentran y comparten. Eso es genial, pero hay un aspecto de Diciembre, que a mí, en lo particular, no me gusta, es más, lo detesto, y esto es el uso de pirotecnia o fuegos artificiales.

Every December I see how my animals (dogs and cats) suffer from the sound of rockets and the like, and every December I wonder what's so cool about exploding packages of gunpowder, which make a horrible sound and only give an ephemeral spectacle, which is not worth the suffering and death of many animals. I don't like that, it seems cruel and atrocious to me. And I say this with bases. A few years ago, as a result of fireworks, I lost one of my cats, the first cat that my husband and I adopted, who was like our daughter. It was a very sad, regrettable loss, with which we ended the year 2017.

Cada Diciembre veo como mis animales (perros y gatos) sufren por el sonido de cohetes y similares, y cada Diciembre me pregunto qué tiene de genial explotar paquetes de pólvora, que hacen un sonido espantoso y sólo dan un efímero espectáculo, que no vale el sufrimiento y la muerte de muchos animales. Eso no me gusta, me parece cruel y atroz. Y esto lo digo con bases. Hace pocos años, a consecuencia de la pirotecnia, perdí a una de mis gatas, la primera gata que adoptamos mi esposo y yo, que era como nuestra hija. Fue una pérdida muy triste, lamentable, con la cual finalizamos el año 2017.

So, every December we accompanied our animals, we gave them herbal infusions to calm them, but that 2017, our beloved cat escaped from the house and met her death in a horrible way. I will never forget that. After this loss, we consulted our veterinarian, and he recommended a pain reliever that can be given to dogs and cats, and since 2018, every year, we buy this medicine, and according to the weight of each of our animals, we give it to them. We supply in the afternoon, so that the calming effect develops progressively, and when night comes, either December 24 (Christmas Eve) or December 31 (New Year's Eve), which is when we hear more detonations, they are already calm and can tolerate the noise of fireworks a little better.

Entonces, cada Diciembre acompañábamos a nuestros animales, les suministrábamos infusiones herbales, para calmarles, pero ese 2017, nuestra amada gata escapó de la casa y encontró la muerte de un modo espantoso. Eso nunca lo olvidaré. Después de esta pérdida, consultamos a nuestro veterinario, y él nos recomendó un calmante que puede suministrarse a perros y gatos, y desde el 2018, cada año, compramos este medicamento, y de acuerdo al peso de cada uno de nuestros animales, se lo suministramos en horas de la tarde, para que el efecto calmante se desarrolle progresivamente, y ya llegada la noche, ya sea del 24 (Nochebuena) o 31 (Nochevieja) de Diciembre, que es cuando se oyen más detonaciones, ellos ya estén calmados y puedan soportar un poco mejor el ruido de los fuegos artificiales.

The veterinary medicine I'm talking about, is called QUIET, and the presentation we always buy is a box containing 10 tablets, each containing 20 milligrams. This product for oral use is anti-stress, sedative, antiemetic, anxiolytic and pre-anesthetic. The active agent is Chlorpromazine (hydrochloride), which is a substance used for the treatment of schizophrenia in humans, although it has many warnings and restrictions. In dogs and cats it has the effects that I already indicated, but it must be administered under the supervision of a specialist.

El medicamento veterinario del cual les hablo, se llama QUIET, y la presentación que siempre compramos es una caja contentiva de 10 tabletas, cada una de 20 miligramos. Este producto de uso oral, es antiestrés, sedante, antiemético, ansiolítico y pre-anestésico. El agente activo es la Clorpromacina (clorhidrato), que es una sustancia que se usa para el tratamiento de esquizofrenia en humanos, aunque tiene muchas advertencias y restricciones. En perros y gatos tiene los efectos que ya indiqué, pero debe ser suministrado bajo supervisión de un especialista.

We are lucky that the veterinarian, who is a great friend, comes to our house to see our animals, in this way, he is the one who, every year, indicates the exact doses for each of the dogs and cats, and the hours when they should be supplied, which is generally 2 to 3 p.m. of each critical day. In the photos you can see two boxes of the product, and this is because we use almost a full box each day. The price of each box is $7.5 USD, but in practice it was almost $10 per box, since they charged in exchange for parallel dollars, which are more expensive.

Nosotros tenemos la suerte de que el veterinario, que es un gran amigo, viene a casa a ver a nuestros animales, de este modo, es él quien cada año, indica las dosis exactas para cada uno de los perros y gatos, y las horas en que deben ser suministradas, que generalmente es a las 2 a 3 p.m. de cada día crítico. En las fotos pueden ver dos cajas del producto, y esto es, porque gastamos casi una caja completa en cada jornada. El precio de cada caja es de 7,5 $ USD, pero en la práctica fueron casi 10 $ cada caja, ya que cobraron a cambio de dólar paralelo, que es más costoso.

This anxiolytic, although it does not calm our dogs and cats 100%, does make them calmer and it is easier to accompany them and, thus, overcome together the terrible moments, in which humans forget that not only they are in the planet, that there are more lives, more species, more sentient beings; and they exploit the entire stock of gunpowder they have at their disposal. Curiously, each animal behaves differently the next day. There are some that make them cry, like when a human has drunk a lot of alcohol and cries out of sadness. Others have very dark circles under their eyes and are still. Others are simply calmer, it all depends on each individual. And I reiterate, the administration of this medication requires veterinary supervision.

Este ansiolítico, si bien no calma al 100% a nuestros perros y gatos, sí les hace estar más tranquilos y es más sencillo acompañarlos y, así superar juntos los terribles momentos, en que a los humanos se les olvida que no sólo ellos están en el planeta, que hay más vidas, más especies, más seres sintientes; y explotan todo el stock de pólvora que tienen a disposición. Curiosamente, cada animal, al día siguiente se comporta de modo diferente. Hay algunos que les da por llorar, como cuando un humano ha bebido mucho alcohol y llora de tristeza. A otros se les marcan mucho las ojeras y están quietos. Otros simplemente están más calmos, todo depende de cada individuo. Y reitero, la administración de este medicamento requiere supervisión veterinaria.
