Walking through tall grass and bushes to reach the once imposing and now ruined Bissingen Castle in Vlajkovac, a village before the entrance to the Vrsac town in Serbia, I wondered what the story behind this castle was and why it is now in such a ruined state. I saw the castle from the car on the way to Vrsac town, which I visited with my family a few days ago. Although I have been to this town several times, I have never noticed this castle before and I am happy that I returned from this trip richer for a new experience.
We stopped to look at the castle.
There is no doubt that this is one of the most beautiful castles I have seen. I am a big fan of castles and fortresses and I am especially fascinated by castles whose beauty shines behind abandoned ruins and survives despite neglect.
It is obvious that a lot of effort and stylistically impressive decoration was invested in the construction of this magnificent building.
It was built in the middle of the 19th century by a count who built it on his estate for his family. I read there that a countess from that family gave this castle as a dowry to the Austro-Hungarian noble family of Bissingen-Nippenburg and it was in their possession until the end of the Second World War when they were expelled and people without apartments began to temporarily move in there until they left it completely to decay.
The facade of the castle is a pale ocher color, very elegant. I headed to the gate and went in because it was open.
Through the treetops I saw that the windows were open.
As well as the door, so I was happy to be able to peek inside.
I asked the neighbors across the street if anyone was staying inside, but they told me that sometimes a local vagrant comes, but that there shouldn't be anyone inside now. Of course, to be careful because the building is collapsing.
The windows are overgrown with creeping plants.
The entrance area is surrounded by pillars that make the castle even more elegant.
It was built in a classic style, the decorations are simple and beautiful. Doors and windows are decorated with iron elements.
When I entered the floor was creaking. It was a bit scary.
The rooms were quite ruined. Locals say that there were many valuable items in the castle, luxurious stoves and stylish furniture, but nothing was left of it because it was stolen.
I wanted to go up the stairs, but when I found myself in front of them, I didn't dare.
Although everything of value was taken, one can easily imagine the luxurious life of a noble family inside.
The good news is that there is hope that the castle will be saved from decay by renovation while maintaining the status of a cultural monument. It remains to be seen whether it will happen as announced.
