Hello friends of the hive. It is a pleasure to be with you again. Today I bring you details of one of my last visits, which I made together with the company, a small group of friends.
Hola amigos de la colmena. Es un placer estar nuevamente con ustedes. En el día de hoy les traigo detalles de una de mis últimas visitas, la cual realicé junto a la compañía, de un pequeño grupo de amistades.
Approaching sunset yesterday, we decided to venture to one of the complexes of abandoned buildings in our province: Havana. Located in the municipality of Playa, in front of one of those that were, the largest supermarkets in Cuba, named as "La Puntilla", are these properties. Who in another era, belonged to the families of the highest class, in the capital's society.
Acercándose el atardecer del día de ayer, decidimos aventurarnos, a uno de los complejos de edificios abandonados en nuestra provincia: La Habana. Situado en el municipio de Playa, frente a uno de los que fueron, los supermercados más grandes de Cuba, nombrado como "La Puntilla", se encuentran estos inmuebles. Quienes en otra época, pertenecieron a las familias de la clase más alta, en la sociedad capitalina.
With the triumph of the Castro revolution, in the 1960s, the buildings stopped receiving maintenance. To this, added the deterioration by the sea, because of its location, the place that was glamorous, gradually became rotten. Its inhabitants at that time were forced to find another place to live, leaving the center dismantled. As a curiosity, it should be noted that a small part of the complex, the most superficial, is still inhabited by one or another family. Old neighbors of the place, who cling to the only home they had.
Con el triunfo de la revolución castrista, en los años 60, los edificios dejaron de recibir mantenimiento. A esto, sumado el deterioro por el mar, a causa de su ubicación, el lugar que se mostraba glamuroso, fue convirtiéndose en una podredumbre. Sus habitantes en aquel entonces, se vieron obligados a buscar otro lugar en el que vivir, quedando el centro desmantelado. Como curiosidad, cabe destacar, que una pequeña parte del complejo, la más superficial, se encuentra aún habitada por una que otra familia. Viejos vecinos del lugar, que se aferran al único hogar que tenían.
Without further ado, we approached the buildings making as little noise as possible, partly due to the poor condition of the facilities. Going through one of its sides.
Sin más dilación, nos acercamos a los edificios haciendo el menor ruido posible, en parte por el mal estado en el que se encuentran las instalaciones. Atravesando por uno de sus costados.
We saw each other in a few seconds in the center of the place. Highlighting what was the pool, which as expected, its walls were dirty and cracked.
Nos vimos en pocos segundos en el centro del lugar. Destacándose lo que fue la piscina, que como era de esperarse, sus paredes estaban sucias y agrietadas.
Throughout the area, we were looking for the entrance, but due to the state of this site, and the work of nature itself, which has gradually taken over the place, we could not find it.
Por toda la zona, estuvimos buscando la entrada, pero debido al estado en que se encuentra este sitio, y el trabajo propio de la naturaleza, que de a poco se ha ido adueñando del lugar, no pudimos dar con ella.
So it occurred to us to jump over a balcony, to enter what it was, an apartment on the ground floor.
Así que se nos ocurrió saltar un balcón, para adentrarnos en lo que fue, un apartamento de la planta baja.
It is worth mentioning that at this point, I already felt a little nervous and uncomfortable, due to the instability of the ground, and the pieces of it that had fallen. Opening large holes, which led directly to what was the garage. Approaching one of these missing parts, we were surprised and disgusted to see how it is, flooded with water and rats.
Cabe mencionar que para este punto, ya me sentía un poco nerviosa e incómoda, a causa de la inestabilidad del suelo, y los pedazos de este caídos. Abriendo grandes huecos, que daban directo a lo que fue el garaje.Acercándonos a una de estas partes faltantes, nos llevamos la sorpresa y el desagrado de ver, cómo se encuentra el mismo, inundado de agua y ratas.
Every corner of the apartments was overwhelming. There were still traces of what was a place inhabited by a family, with a history, and with a day to day lived within those walls.
Cada rincón de los apartamentos era sobrecogedor. Aún quedaban huellas de lo que fue un lugar habitado por una familia, con una historia, y con un día a día vivido dentro de esas paredes.
We also made out what the rooms were, still with remains of some other object, corroded by the passage of time.
Divisamos también, lo que fueron los cuartos, aún con restos de alguno que otro objeto, corroído por el paso del tiempo.
In the bathroom, although with pieces of the ceiling and debris on it, there was still the bathtub.
En el baño, aunque con pedazos de techo y desechos sobre ella, se encontraba aún la bañera.
Unfortunately we couldn't get to the kitchen. Precisely, because of one of these huge holes in the ground, which prevented the passage to the other side.
Lamentablemente no pudimos llegar a la cocina. Precisamente, a causa de uno de estos enormes agujeros en el suelo, que impedía el paso hacia el otro lado.
We tried to enter the neighboring apartment, but our action was prevented. A huge and rusty gate that was closed, blocked our entrance. Probably placed there, by the work of those who were its inhabitants many years ago. That they decided to leave their home closed, perhaps with the false hope of one day being able to return. (If you look closely at these images, you can see the dining table at the back of the room).
Intentamos entrar al apartamento vecino, pero nuestra acción se vio imposibilitada. Una enorme y oxidada reja que se encontraba cerrada, nos bloqueaba la entrada. Probablemente puesta allí, por obra de quienes fueron hace muchos años sus habitantes. Que decidieron dejar cerrada su morada, tal vez con la falsa esperanza de algún día poder regresar. (Si se fijan bien en estas imágenes, se puede observar la mesa de comedor al fondo de la sala).
Without further ado, we set out to infiltrate the adjoining building, which looked in worse condition, where not even the most intrepid neighbors would dare to enter.
Sin más que pensar nos dispusimos a infiltrarnos en el edificio contiguo, el cual se veía en peores condiciones, donde ni los vecinos más intrépidos se atreverían a entrar.
Along the way, our attention was drawn to what was the complex's old water motor, of which only a few broken and rusty pieces remained.
Por el camino nos llamó mucho la atención lo que fue el antiguo motor de agua del complejo, del que solo quedaban algunas piezas rotas y oxidadas.
And we took a quick look, through the bits of holes where the windows used to be, at some of the other apartments.
Y echamos una vista rápida, por medio de los agujeros donde estaban los ventanales, a algunos de los otros apartamentos.
Finally we discovered where the stairs were to go up to the following floors, however, we had to go through a narrow corridor, which my intuition made me see something dangerous. The one who decided to take the initiative and cross first was my partner. At this moment we all got a tremendous scare, especially me, knowing that he was on the other side...
Por fin descubrimos donde se encontraban las escaleras para subir a los siguientes pisos, sin embargo, había que atravesar por un estrecho pasillo, el cual mi intuición me hacía ver algo peligroso. Quien decidió tomar la iniciativa y cruzar de primero fue mi pareja. En este momento todos nos llevamos un susto tremendo, principalmente yo, sabiendo que el estaba del otro lado...
From the heights, they fell towards our direction, two stones in a continuous way. (Unfortunately for this moment we could not take pictures). Without thinking twice, our instincts made us ask my boyfriend to cross again and run out of there. Returning to the center of the place, we justify what happened as a coincidence, or thinking that it was the work of the wind (something totally improbable, since there was no force of wind at that moment). Despite forcing ourselves to believe that, we decided not to go in there again.
Desde las alturas, cayeron hacia nuestra dirección, dos piedras de forma continúa. (Lamentablemente para este momento no pudimos hacer fotografías). Sin pensarlo dos veces, nuestro instinto nos hizo pedirle a mi novio que cruzara nuevamente y salir corriendo de allí. Regresando al centro del lugar, justificamos lo sucedido como una casualidad, o pensando que fue obra del viento (cosa del todo improbable, ya que no había fuerza de viento en ese momento). A pesar de forzarnos a creer eso, decidimos no volver a entrar allí.
Continuing our exploration, but this time in a more superficial way, we walked along one of the sides near the sea, and we were able to notice (if you look at the images you will also notice it). As they were placed, in the holes of the windows, in quite specific ways, some stones. Waiting to be thrown by someone from the heights, perhaps at the slightest noise or at the passing of one or another curious explorer, as was the case with us.
Continuando nuestra exploración, pero esta vez de forma más superficial, caminamos por uno de los costados cercanos al mar, y pudimos notar, (si ustedes se fijan en las imágenes también lo notarán). Como estaban colocadas, en los huecos de los ventanales, de formas bastante específicas, algunas piedras. Esperando a ser lanzadas por alguien desde las alturas, tal vez al menor ruido o al paso de uno que otro explorador curioso, como fue nuestro caso.
This scene filled us with terror and without thinking twice, we decided to get out of this terrifying place. Approaching the sea coast. To spend the rest of the afternoon there, in the company of long talks and a little wine. As we advanced, the dilapidated building, little by little, was left in the distance.
Esta escena nos llenó de terror y sin pensarlo dos veces, nos decidimos a salir de este aterrador lugar. Acercándonos a la costa marítima. Para pasar allí el resto de la tarde, en compañía de largas charlas y un poco de vino. Mientras avanzábamos, el destartalado inmueble, poco a poco, fue quedando en la lejanía.
Leaving us with the following question: What would those who decided to escape from there at the beginning think, if they could now return and observe what their homes have become?
Dejándonos con la siguiente interrogante: ¿Que pensarían los que decidieron escapar de allí en un inicio, si actualmente pudieran regresar y observar en lo que quedaron convertidos sus hogares?
