I always knew that some millions of young adults were unemployed and I sympathize with them from the bottom of my heart, but I never guessed I would turn out to be one of those 'unemployed' people out there.
Reality has its way of catching up with us. I guess mine finally caught up with me after spending so many years in school to graduate with good results and get 'a dream job'. A job that will put me in a position to wear a suit, knot tie and carry a briefcase around. A briefcase filled with currencies.
Imagine that...the thought of someone who didn't know what the future has in store for him.
I just looked up google - for stat's sake - to see the current unemployment figure in Nigeria. The research shows that 21,764,614 Nigerians are currently unemployed. This figure beats the overall population of many countries and thousands of people will be joining the labour market every year.
The figure will get bigger because every year, people get admitted to study one course or another. On the other hand, thousands of people are also graduating and jumping into the labour market. The pressure to get something doing kicks in, hunger starts knocking on the door and you will see people sending job application to any advert placement they see.
Even those that dreamed of 'chilling with da big boyz' will also start applying for a job of $60 per month.
It doesn't matter if they need a banker, someone that studied theatre art will brush up on his CV and forward it for the advertised role. The labour market is not a joke. It's also not for the faint-hearted. When you hear the story of job seekers, you will be glad that you have something that pays your bills.
I can still recall when I had to use Excel documents to keep track of the job applications I've sent. The list went on and on. I applied both online and offline until I decided to pause all that and keep my academic credentials aside.
I wouldn't say that my certificate is useless - You won't hear that from me. It's there in my file and I hope I don't ever find myself in a position where I would need to submit that certificate before getting into a sort of agreement with anyone/organisation.
The face of reality
I got an offer this afternoon to send a CV which will be assessed based on my eligibility and work experience.
Remember what I said about a job that will put me in a position to wear a suit, knot tie and carry a briefcase around? That's what this job would offer in abundance. Surprisingly, I didn't think twice before turning down the offer.
Okay, to be fair, I thought about it but it took a few secs for me to come back to my senses...and decline.
Surprised?
I know, this choice may come back to bite me hard, but I'm already walking on a different lane. My dream job of yesterday is no longer in alignment with what I want for myself in the nearest future.
FTR, I'm still 'unemployed' by many criteria as far as employment status is concerned in Nigeria. Yet I'm still the busiest person I know 😂. No kidding about that.
I only pray that all my busyness will yield great returns for perpetuity.
Thanks For Not Missing Any Full-stop Or Comma
