This week's theme is fantastic; We've already seen loads of people having their childhood memories surfacing and I am no exception! For me this particular song came straight to my mind!
I've been in the UK for over 20 years, and have never really done any German songs. I never thought there was an appetite for that 😄, maybe there isn't here either, but it has to be done with a silly hat and all.. ha
I own several bikes, but my favourite came with me all the way from Hamburg; My trusted Peugeot is over 35 years old (oh dear!) and had a major make-over a few years back by my partner Ray, who is a keen cyclist himself. I think, it's more beautiful than ever and still runs like a charm!
My bike came from "Fahrrad Pagels" and cost me around 300 DM, I seem to remember, which was a small fortune for me!
The shop celebrated 90 years of trading last year and is now in new younger hands, but still treasured by the locals.
This is my original Peugie; the new look can be admired in the video..
I used to ride this bike everywhere in and around Hamburg. It is very easy there, as you can take your bike on public transport, incl. busses, in the old days even during busy working hours. We had loads of bike outings with the whole family, which were loved by all!
The song from 1978 fits the mood of those cycling days perfectly, as it's all about the joy of riding a bike on a beautiful day.
All my life I thought it was a German song, but recently I found this video and some notes that the melody was not actually written by him, however, people still sing his version to this day!
Obviously, I can not verify the video, but thought it being interesting nevertheless.
I've put a quick translation here for Peter Petrel's version.
Oh, and I've changed the gender of the song!
It's time that a woman sits in the lazy back seat... 😉

I like to ride my bike I like to ride my bike When the sun shines, and the winds blow and others stand stupidly at the traffic light Then I step on the pedal And think, they can get lost Overtaking all of them Enjoying the day I like to ride my bike I say, people, this has got to end I like to ride my bike Heiner, make the sandwiches, pack the thermos I like to ride my bike.. And when I'm really drunk one night I like to ride my bike.. |
