When I was a kid — and even when I was a young man — I always thought it was slightly funny and odd how the adults in my life would spend so much time talking about "the weather."
And here I am, now aged 62, writing a blog post about precisely that: the weather.
I'm sitting here looking out across our back yard as a quiet rain falls, watching the rings in the puddles and water droplets fall from leaves and branches. Normally you wouldn't think much of that around here because — after all — we do live in what's often referred to as "the rainy Pacific Northwest." However, it has been bone dry around here since some part of early June with the exception of a couple of very brief afternoon thunderstorms that each dropped maybe 1/20th of an inch of rain here.
As I watched the first raindrops fall yesterday afternoon, I found myself recognizing that I have actually missed the rain; that life-giving rain which keeps this place eternally green.
Now I'm watching as the ground soaks it up, and I can almost hear the plants and trees around me breathing a sigh of relief that there's finally going to be some nourishment that comes to them from somewhere other than the end of a garden hose.
We take many things for granted on this planet. In many parts of the world water is one of those things we take for granted.
Meanwhile, the first snows of the winter season have started falling at one of our main mountain passes crossing the Cascade mountain range towards the eastern part of the state.
Hard to believe that just a couple of days ago, we were watering the garden, keeping our late tomatoes and our pumpkins going!
I have always rather liked the rain… there’s something vaguely comforting about the way it slightly muffles sounds, and the gentle sound of raindrops on leaves is almost hypnotic, like a never-ending meditation.
I think back to my childhood, and even then I didn't mind getting a bit wet when we went outside to play... my parents, on the other hand would get to eternally complaining and lamenting, whenever the rains came.
Small wonder they ended up settling in the Phoenix, AZ area when they retired!
To be honest, I am too attached to the color green to live in the desert... so I never stayed that long when I went to visit them.
Meanwhile... I shall now go back to enjoying the gentle sound of rain through my cracked open home office window...
Thanks for stopping by, and have a great weekend!
