Well, here we are, at another edition of writing "1/1" on the page.
For the moment, feeling upbeat about it because it's Sunday, and we have just finished our traditional New Year's Shrimp Boil... which was a suitably delicious way to start the year!
...Aaaandd... It's Outta Here!
I don't know if I am just getting more jaded and cynical+ with age, but it's starting to increasingly feel like every year in recent memory the change of the year has been accompanied primarily by a feeling of relief that the shitshow that was the old year is finally outta here, and we can start on something new.
I've been trying to remember the good things about 2022... and I'm just not going to spin my wheels on that one.
Instead, let's just welcome 2023. I'm hesitant to say "well, it could hardly be WORSE" than 2022, but I don't want to tempt the fates.
A Day of "Recording Stuff
On my long list of "I have always meant to" is the item of always having meant to take accurate economic, financial and other snapshots at the end of December of the old year, so as to have actually concrete bases for comparison... rather than my typical "as far as I remember" approach.
I recognize that part of my lackadaisical attitude has come from avoidance of knowing the real truth... a truth that typically has been that things rarely turn out even remotely as well as I had hoped they might.
I can look back at my formative years, and I realize that the habit started when I was a teenager and was trying to hide the fact that I really *wasn't very good" at most of the things my parents expected me to excel at... so if I could pull a smoke screen over my basis for comparison, I could get away with "decorating" reality a little bit... and thereby not have to endure lengthy and repeated lectures about what a miserable disappointment and failure I was.
Goals and Ambitions?
Still working that one out.
"Simplification" continues to be near the top of the list. With the desire for simplification, the vain hope that perhaps we can reduce our credit card debt. The sad fact is that during 2022 the economic situation was such that we had to borrow simply to cover daily/monthly expenses. But... we'll be selling a bunch of stuff in our surroundings, so hopefully that will help the cash flow.
Ironically, people inevitably end up having to "sell their belongings" during the worst possible economic times... but those are simply the cycles of life. At least you end up with a clean slate!
"Making life SMALLER" is — sadly — something I have aspired to ever since really not wanting to "upgrade" the complexity of my life very much when I graduated college... but that's not how life works.
Every year, Mrs. Denmarkguy and I try to come up with a "theme" of sorts for the new year... and this year we've decided to depart from any of our previous themes by declaring that this year we just want to have a really DULL year.
What's important there, is that dull isn't the same as boring. Dull — at least to us — means uneventful and maybe undramatic and potentially not extreme.
In a sense, it is akin to the Buddhist "Middle Way."
So here's to a successfully dull year!
Thanks for stopping by, and Happy New Year to all!
