I remember some 10 or 12 years ago — when I first started poking around in the world of the Cryptosphere — being part of an online discussion in which several crypto evangelists and blockchainacs we're making their case for cryptos taking over the world.
Being the neophyte that I was at the time, I looked at it all and felt a certain excitement and enthusiasm for what I was seeing, but at the same time offered my sincere opinion — keeping in mind that I was definitely not a Luddite in terms of technology usability — that the main reason it was not going to go anywhere anytime soon was that it was all far too complicated.
It wasn't really an objection, as such, so much as simply pointing out that "tech bros" have a disturbingly myopic way of presuming that everybody in the world thinks like a tech bro when in fact almost nobody thinks like a tech bro. Accept, of course, for another tech bro.
So here we are in 2025 and I just returned to have a look at the re-imagined Inleo after about a two months absence (new grandchild born with extensive “complications”) reading about all the new developments and changes. That it all sounds grand and exciting and amazing and so forth and so on is not what I am disputing, but I do find myself going back to the exact point I made all those years ago: ”this is really amazing, but it's still far too complicated!”
Part of the "problem" here is that the expectation of usability among the broader public has gotten greater, and a reality that all you need is ”I turned it on and everything's working” has gotten far higher in the interim, while crypto/blockchain related stuff remains extremely complicated. There are so many contingencies and extensions and bits and keys and wallets and swaps and gas fees and transfers to be set up that most people's eyes are going to glaze over before they even get started.
As I said, I'm no Luddite… I started messing around with computers and the Internet in the late 1980s!
That said, I look at what's ahead of us and recognize that it's going require hours of study and reading documentation and posts and guides and FAQs to get all the cross chain operability and wallets and what have you to work, and while I have no doubt that I eventually will figure it all out, the vast majority of people would look at it and either give up because it's too complicated, or give up because they don't have the expectation of putting in that much time and effort and study in order to make something work!
And many guides and FAQs make incorrect (or incomplete) assumptions... you might get the perfect information about a wallet, but it ends up needing a tiny bit of some crypto as gas fees which has to come from somewhere, and it is (falsely) assumed that the new user suddenly knows the ins and outs of external wallets, swaps and more.
Short version: what crypto really needs to do is stop focusing on having so many features and instead put some energy into making the features easy to use!
Understand that if you want worldwide adoption, and more people involved in web 3.0, the first thing you have to do is make the damn stuff easy to use!
The other thing I still see a lot is a heavy focus on the investing end of crypto, as opposed to the using end of crypto.
The "problem" I see with that is that there is no shortage of people ready to put in their tokens — of whatever kind — in order to earn a high rate of return... but who are the actual users who are going to allegedly line up to use said system, as a result of which all those revenues are generated?
I often think in terms of it as the metaphor that you can build the world's most amazing supermarket, but if you place it in the middle of nowhere, Wyoming it won't matter.
So, my 3c worth: Let's make it simpler!
