In order to get the things you want in life, you have to be willing to put yourself in harm's way.
What I mean by that, is that in order to (reliably) get your results you have to be willing to put in the work.
Perhaps that is an unpopular thing to suggest in this day and age — where so many people seem to have expectations of "easy money" or "money for nothing" — but nothing's going to happen unless you put in the work, in one way or another.
Unless, that is, you're playing the lottery or gambling in the casino as opposed to actually accomplishing something!
What prompted me to write these words was a conversation with a young acquaintance who was lamenting her lack of a relationship... but a little poking around revealed that she's doing absolutely nothing to put herself in a situation where she'd even meet anyone.
Of course, this sort of thinking/inaction isn't limited to relationships; it applies to a broad spectrum of life.
You're unlikely to get your "dream job" if nobody's aware that you're even looking for a job. You're unlikely to "become rich" if you're not saving your money and investing it.
Sometimes it feels like there's a growing disconnect between what we say we want and taking the steps to actually get to those things.
I remember a couple of decades back when The Secret and "Manifesting" and "The Law of Attraction" suddenly became a big deal and exploded well beyond the typical New Age audience.
A lot of people missed the point back then, to.
Indeed, visualization and positive focused intent can be very useful tools but you have to take action in support of your visualizations. You can't just sit on your couch and wish for winning the lottery... you have to go to the store and buy a ticket!
Stated a little differently: You have to put yourself "in harm's way."
I suppose "emotional laziness" is a fairly widespread thing.
As a counselor, Mrs. Denmarkguy is really good at helping people sort out their traumas and move forward with their lives. But she repeatedly has to make it clear to potential clients that she is not just going to enable someone to sit and stew in everything wrong with their life is "their parents' fault."
In fact, she "fires" clients when she figures out they just want her permission to continue to be miserable.
If you want to actually heal, you have to be willing to put yourself in harm's way.
You also can't expect to become a successful blogger and community member on Hive without publishing and engaging consistently.
Not that Hive is really any different from other social media venues, in that particular respect. It just happens to be where we are.
Regardless, you have to be willing to show up and put in the effort consistently... simply wishing for it isn't going to bring you any closer.
Seems like what I am suggesting here is super basic and common sense, and yet it's remarkable how many people seem to operate on the assumption that "something just happens" without their actual involvement.
I suppose the situation is made a little more challenging by the fact that people can invariably find — and point to — "the exception" to common sense... and then they cling to the idea that that's how things happen.
And it's absolutely true. You CAN win the lottery. People do it all the time! But there are also millions of people who actually buy lottery tickets and still never win.
Alas, their stories are not newsworthy.
Thanks for stopping by, and have a great week ahead!
