Have you moved often ? Within city or to another city, or even another country ?
Moving a house is not easy and I have had this experience very recently, as we moved her parent's house to a new place closer to us. Even though the house is not far away, it still needed lot of planning and execution. So let me share some tips from my very recent experience on making the move easier.
There are variety of movers and packers and choosing the one that fits right for our requirement is the first step. The premium vendors charge very high, since this was a nearby shifting, I contacted few vendors to get the idea of the quote and then picked one. Before that, you need to finalize the date of move, so they come and visit the house and then give the quote based on items in the house.
Some vendors provide all support to relocate the AC, Dish antenna, water heater etc and fitting at the new place, but the amount they quoted was no less, so I contacted my known people to do that, as they take care of permanent maintenance at the new place in the same price. However I wanted my other items packed carefully, so make sure, you ask them what type of packaging they do. For us, they did padded cushioning of all the valuable items and I was still watchful all along - never rely on them entirely.
So on the shifting day, their people came and packed items after which they called in the truck, and it was a big one, to fit to the lane. I did not thought about this, as it caused inconvenience to others. I had to ask the driver to stand at the extreme traffic and divert people - so that they don't scold us after coming in.
And one more twist - when they opened the doors, I saw some water logged inside. Is there a hole in the top ? Yes Sir, it is a small one, and there won't be problem unless it rains heavily.. This is what I hate - people don't have the same level of concerns as us, how can you stop raining in rainy season!!
I asked them to put their cartoons as paper mats and then keep things on them - at the end, it's our stuff that gets damaged. So again, pay close attention to all the process, else they won't bother much.
Unpacking is little easier, but we must ensure, they do it carefully. I had to call in my son to stay in the new house and I stayed at the ground to ensure smooth transition. It took the entire day, and shifting is certainly a difficult task.
We have been staying in the same house for more than 13 years, and I can't even imagine how difficult it would be to shift. When I shifted from Bangalore, the shifting cost was so high that, I gave many things to needy people free of cost. Moving to another city is a big headache and needs more planning.
Hope my recent insight helps someone who is about to shift to a new house. This post is in response to the The Silverbloggers Chronicles - Prompt Number 8
Interestingly, I had these photos taken to write a post and then this prompt came in - what a coincidence.
