Thank you, Hive Community!

It’s 12:35pm Saturday 20 of July 2025 as I start to write this.
I am currently in the city of Adelaide waiting for my shift at the Adelaide Oval to start at 2:15pm.
I was up early this morning to get to the Tea Tree Plaza shopping centre. I’ve agreed to meet a young Chinese guy to help hom with his English. He can speak English but has trouble with pronunciation and comprehension at work.
We also discuss cultural differences.
He’s an accountant and sometimes gives me little financial tips. I am not in a position to put them into practice just yet, but I will when I can.
It’s mutually beneficial.
It would be cool if I could be paid to teach conversational English like this and have it cover my rent and other bills.
That’s something I’ll have to look into.
The Power Of Social Capital
The time before my Adelaide Oval shift a good chance to pause and reflect on the benefits that both the HIVE currency and Hive as a community provides.
In a previous post I outlined my financial position at that time, hoping that there would be solutions provided in the comments section, and there were a few.
What I didn’t expect was for the post to be curated, reblogged (why does no one call it “rehiving”?) 9 times and upvoted the post where it paid out the equivalent of nearly AU$13!

Now, AU$13 isn’t a life changing amount of money, and I am not going to take it out of the Hive ecosystem for a long time to come, but it gives comfort knowing that it’s there if I ever need it. This goes for all of my Hive investments, including HBD and on Hive Engine. APR and compound interest are great things.
I have also made sure there is always an emergency rent payment set aside just in case.
I am not out of the woods, financially speaking, as all of my bills have become due at once, however I know that I can negotiate with my creditors for an extension of a few days if the worst case scenario happens.
I am not a “Doomsday prepper”, but it pays to be wise with money, especially when there is an expected shortage.
I also now have a small welfare payment which has helped somewhat but that is once every two weeks.
Plus a friend helped out with a few essential supplies, one of the benefits of having a good reputation locally.
As you can imagine this situation is less than ideal.
Here on Hive, your reputation matters. The reputation score you can see next to people’s profiles means very little, but it does make it easier to spot the bad actors. Sorta.
The true reputation comes from being here consistently, contributing quality posts, upvoting, commenting supportive comments, being trustworthy and generous within the community over years.
If you are ever attacked by a “bad actor” on Hive, you may find that good people will step in and defend you.
I have had some really nightmarish experiences with a handul of these bad actors, but thankfully they are drops in a metaphorical bathtub full of good people.
I hope that I can continue to be worthy of this kind of support in the future.
Hive can and does make a real world difference, but it’s up to you to choose whether or not you do so.
The choice is yours.
Thank you for reading, upvoting, commenting and even reblogging.
Until next time…

Shaidon
