Today I'm passing by again with a burst of nostalgia, because I dedicated myself to thoroughly cleaning my room and suddenly I came across a collection of old banknotes and coins from different monetary systems that have existed in my country over the years. For those who don't know, I was born, raised, and still live in Venezuela, and here, due to monetary devaluation, we have had several monetary cones. This is why some people (like me) tend to keep some banknotes or coins because we consider them a tangible part of the past or history, through which various memories inevitably come to me. For example, these coins, which are no longer used in my country because people always preferred banknotes (I don't understand why), mentally transport me back to my childhood. It's even hilarious to think that with this amount I have in my hands, approximately 10 bolívares, you could supply your home with food for a couple of weeks or even more. Back then, it was common for my aunts to give me a half-bolívar coin so I could go to the store and buy whatever I wanted, and I was happy because I could buy several sweets. And another interesting and curious fact is that people gave funny names to the coins, for example, a "Fuerte" was a 5 bolívar coin, they called it that because it was large and heavy, a "Chiva" or "Puya" was worth 5 cents, and a "locha" 12 cents.
Hoy paso por aquí nuevamente con un arrebato de nostalgia, y es que me dediqué a la tarea de limpiar a fondo mi habitación y de pronto me topé con una colección de viejos billetes y monedas de diferentes conos monetarios que han existido en mi país a lo largo de los años. Para los que no lo saben yo nací, crecí y vivo aún en Venezuela, y aquí, por motivos de devaluación monetaria hemos tenido varios conos monetarios, razón por la cuál algunas personas (como yo) solemos guardar algunos billetes o monedas porque las consideramos una parte tangible del pasado o de la historia, a través de la cuál me llegan inevitablemente varios recuerdos. Por ejemplo estas monedas que ya no se usan en mi país ya que la gente siempre prefirió los billetes (no entiendo porqué) me trasladan mentalmente a mi niñez, es incluso hilarante pensar que con esta cantidad que tengo en las manos, aproximadamente 10 bolívares, podías abastecer de comida tu hogar por un par de semanas y hasta más. En aquella época era común que mis tías me regalaran una moneda de medio bolívar para que yo fuese a la tienda a comprar lo que quisiera, y yo era feliz porque me compraba varias golosinas. Y otro dato interesante y curioso es que la gente le ponía nombres graciosos a las monedas como por ejemplo "Fuerte" era una moneda de 5 bolívares, la llamaban así porque era grande y pesada, una "Chiva" o "Puya" tenía un valor de 5 centavos y una "locha" 12 centavos.
These banknotes are from approximately the 1970s or 1980s; they are 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 bolívar notes. They were used for many years, and seeing them reminds me of the years I worked in a pharmaceutical laboratory, a company called Laboratorios Elmor. I was one of the founding workers at the plant in my city and worked there for approximately 16 years. In later years, the company was obviously better organized, so we had bank accounts where our money was deposited, but in the beginning, I remember they gave us banknotes like these in an envelope, and when I got home I organized them into several different envelopes to manage expenses. It was a good time. Hahaha, and I also remember something particular. Sometimes I would keep a certain amount of money in an envelope and leave it somewhere to deal with any eventuality. So, on one occasion, during January, after the Christmas and New Year's shopping, my wife and I were very tight with our expenses, but then she found that envelope I had kept there and I had even forgotten about it, so it was a great relief for both of us.
Estos billetes son de más o menos los años 70 u 80, son de 5,10, 20, 50 y 100 bolívares, se usaron por muchos años, y al verlos recuerdo los años en que trabajé en un laboratorio de elaboración de medicamentos, Laboratorios Elmor se llama la empresa. Yo fui parte de los trabajadores fundadores de la planta que estaba en mi ciudad y trabajé allí por 16 años aproximadamente, en los años posteriores obviamente la empresa estaba ya mejor organizada, así que teníamos cuentas bancarias donde nos depositaban el dinero, pero en un inicio recuerdo que nos entregaban billetes como estos en un sobre, y al llegar a casa yo los organizaba en varios sobres diferentes para administrar los gastos. Fue una buena época. Jajaja y también recuerdo algo particular, a veces yo guardaba cierta cantidad de dinero en un sobre y lo dejaba guardado por ahí para resolver cualquier eventualidad, entonces en una ocasión, durante el mes de enero, luego de las compras de navidad y año nuevo, mi esposa y yo estábamos muy ajustados con los gastos, pero entonces ella consiguió ese sobre que yo había mantenido por ahí y hasta se me había olvidado, así que fue un gran alivio para los dos.
Of all that monetary cone, this was my favorite bill, the 50 bolívar bill, I just think it's prettier.
De todo ese cono monetario, este era mi billete favorito, el de 50 bolívares, es que me parece más bonito.
I also have these, which are more recent; I liked them very much because they not only featured the national heroes, but also had an animal from my country's fauna on the back. When that monetary cone came out, I was satisfied because the design was truly one of the most beautiful.
También tengo estos que son más recientes, me gustaban mucho porque no solo tenían a los próceres de la patria, sino que en el dorso tenían un animal que forma parte de la fauna de mi país. Cuando salió ese cono monetario yo estaba satisfecho porque realmente el diseño era de los más hermosos.

As I told you, I like these kinds of things because they are a way to revisit the past and connect with it through memories, and in this way we relive them in some way.
Tal como les dije, me gustan este tipo de cosas porque son una manera de volver a tocar el pasado y conectarte con él a través de los recuerdos y de esta manera volvemos a vivirlos de alguna forma.
I'm very happy to have shared my experiences and memories with you all. I truly feel very comfortable in this community where we all understand each other so well because we're from a nostalgic but beautiful generation. Blessings to you all, we'll see you another time, God willing.
