WISE AND NOBLE CROW
I didn’t actually draw this all today, I only finished it today.
It was inspired by this earlier sketch, from 8/31/2024. Honestly I like the first one better even though it took a lot less time. Strangely, the name Azrael came into my mind while drawing him…I later searched that name and found that it has some interesting history. I didn’t know the history when it popped into my head and I wrote it into the initial sketch.
PROCESS PHOTOS
I started out by copying the outline from my original sketch and capturing the basic structure around the face and eyes.
I filled in the recess above his beak with blue acrylic paint. It felt like a mistake so I used some black lines to make it feel more fitting.
The thought of filling it all in black or using my typical style both didn’t feel right. In this portion, I think my vision was larger than my skills, but it was fun to try capturing the textured fill that I saw in my head.
Over the black acryilic paint, I filled the upper wing in with a topcoat of red Sharpie to soften the black and give it a sort of living sheen…not sure if it really came through too much, but up close I like the effect it had.
Seeing it in photo, I can tell instantly some places where I might have done better, even without increasing my skills - but I am certainly enjoying the process of working with art and imagery again after so long.
365 Days of Sketches: SEPTEMBER 2024
At the start of my “sketch-a-day” journey, I thought it might be nice to track individual sketches to track progress subjectively over the months…I didn’t make it very far.

I wound up falling short, I stopped keeping track of these - and even stopped doing them on a strict 100% daily basis…I guess life just happens or whatever. I made it to 11 days though, and will still be trying to practice as regularly as possible - however I am ditching plans of keeping specific track of each sketch.
