I like birds with interesting beaks and one of them is the pied avocet that only can be found at Lake Neusiedler here in Austria. When I visited this lake last weekend I had to take several pictures of these birds and it was nice to watch them fighting and looking for food in the shallow water. There was a lot of action since some males tried to fight for a female. But most of the time they where searching the shallow water for some food they can get there. The pied avocets are one of the bigger birds there and they have a very nice black and white plumage. These birds forage in shallow brackish water or on mud flats, often scything their bills from side to side in water (a feeding technique that is unique to the avocets).

I had a very nice spot at the shore of the lake and I layed down on the ground for several hours to watch and take pictures of these birds and also some other smaller waders that could be found there in the shallow water. Even though I spend several hours there it was not boring because there was always some action not only from the pied avocet but also from some other birds.
