During my different photography trips in Austria I was able to take several pictures of the Grey Heron at different places. There is one important grey heron colony in Vienna that I know of and some of these pictures are taken there. But I also found this bird on different occasions at the Inn River and at the wetlands of the Danube. Depending on the spot where you find them they are either very shy and immediately flee when they see you or they don't care about you at all.
On the spots where these bird were hunted in the past, they are extremely careful and hide or fly away. On other spots where this birds felt safe over years they don't show this behavior. So all you need to find is a place where these birds are used to the fact that humans don't kill them. If you don't find a spot like this then they probably flee as they notice you as a threat.

When I am on photography trips in the wetlands of the Inn River or at the wetlands of the Danube rivers there are unfortunately a lot of fishermen who don't like these birds because they eat the fish they want to catch. But in my opinion it is exactly the opposite way. We eat and catch the fish that these birds need. Some people are so selfish these days. We are destroying more and more habitats of animals, birds, insects and other living creatures, and then we wonder when they try to take back some of their former areal.

Since they are pretty big birds but not necessarily the most beautiful birds, they are not my favorite birds to photograph. For example I like the little egrets or the Purple heron or the Eurasian spoonbill way more than the grey heron but these are also way more difficult to take pictures of, since they are pretty seldom here in Austria.
