Hello, community and friends! Greetings! Today, I watched a video about the black-rumped woodpecker, which a friend of ours sent on WhatsApp. Very impressive. A very cute and colorful bird woodpicker. I remembered that we have many photos of these birds from our garden in our archive. After watching the video, I learned that this bird is very smart, with a body length of approximately 9 to 10 inches. Its beak is a special part of its anatomy, as it can peck at any type of hard wood up to 20 times in one second to find its prey, and use its long tongue, which has special anatomy that mainly traps larvae and other insects. When making its nest, it takes about 3 to 4 weeks. The male has a bright red crown, while the female has a more common black feather appearance on the head. In our garden, they are often on coconut trees to find their prey and play with each other.
Sometimes they might have vegan food when they come on the ground, and eat sapota /chikoo fruits.
When I hear it's loud “ki-ki-ki-ki-ki,” which steadily increases in pace and ends in a trill. I just take my camera and run to the backyard.
The tongue is 1 foot long, which helps protect its brain, and it acts like a vacuum sucker to grab larvae or insects.
