While herons live in colonies where they hang out together, I usually see them just out on their own, hunting along sea, river, and lake shores. To my surprise, I came across a couple of herons sharing a moment on a rock by the sea.
I found this very odd because of their usual solitary nature. Then later, I came across another pair of herons, who also appeared to be having a playful frolic by the sea. It felt like an active dating scene.
In flight, the heron looks like a graceful giant with a wingspan of 5-6 feet. It definitely sports those pterodactyl good looks. Sometimes, I hear them croak through the trees in the evening, and they sound threatening in a primaeval kind of way.
In spite of their enormous looking size, they're actually light birds, which is necessary to lift all that hardware. I see them as they fly low or higher altitudes. They get significant lift from their powerful wings and then gently glide down to their landing spot.
