In Calgary, and I'm sure this might be similar in other cities, we have many neighborhood northern flickers. They seem well adapted to living among houses, telephone poles, and trees. When I hear the high-pitched squeak they make, I know there is one nearby. Sometimes when they are pecking away at something metal, there is also a distinct sound that might sound like a jackhammer or drill on metal, but the rapid-fire tapping is this little woodpecker trying to make some holes.
