I was recently going through my cloud storage files to delete what I no longer needed. Now that I'm doing animation work, I need all the storage space I can get. While I was checking which files to delete and which to keep, I came across some photos of PS3 discs that I had taken to post them for trade in a Facebook group dedicated to that. I'm sure that the act of trading games with friends and other people barely exists anymore, but could we say that this is the end of video games in physical format?

Fue así que mientras revisaba que archivos borrar y que dejar, me encontré con una fotos de unos discos de PS3 que tome a fin de publicarlos para cambio en un grupo de Facebook destinado para eso. Estoy seguro que la acción de cambiar juegos con amigos y otras personas ya casi que no exite, pero ¿podríamos decir que es el fin de los videojuegos en formato físico?
I know that in my city there are still stores that sell original PS4 discs and have exchange systems, where the game's release year is taken into account, so as not to exchange a 2024 game, for example, for a 2017 one. In cases like these, the stores take your old game and you have to pay a difference in money. But despite this exchange system that stores offer and many other methods that I'm sure exist, trading games among friends, I think, has almost disappeared. Now the percentage of online games is much higher and more and more options are emerging to share what you play online.
Se que en mi ciudad aún hay tiendas que vende discos de PS4 originales y tienen sistemas de intercambio, donde se toma en cuenta el año de lanzamiento del juego, a fin de no cambiar un juego 2024 por ejemplo por uno 2017, en casos como esos las tiendas te reciben el juego viejo y debes dar una diferencia de dinero. Pero a pesar de este sistema de intercambio que las tiendas ofrecen y muchos otros métodos que estoy seguro que existen, el cambio de juegos entre amigos pienso que casi ha desaparecido, ahora el porcentaje de juegos online es mucho más alto y cada vez más surgen opciones para compartir lo que juegas en linea.

The most incredible thing about all this is that people don't realize that the games they "buy" online aren't really theirs. If the developer decides to remove it from the store where you "bought" it, you'll never be able to download it again from the online library you have on that platform. What you really pay for is a license to play, and that seems unfavorable to me. Something that surprised me a lot was Sony's most recent console, the PS5 Pro, which comes without a disc drive. Initially, with the console's first release, you could choose between the disc and digital versions; now, buying the disc drive is an option, which has a very high cost.
Lo más increíble de todo esto es que las personas no caen en cuenta que los juegos que "compran" en línea no son realmente suyos, si el desarrollador decide darle de baja de la tienda donde lo "compraste" nunca más podrás volverlo a descargar de la biblioteca online que tengas en dicha plataforma. Lo que realmente uno paga es una licencia para poder jugar, y eso para mí resulta desfavorable. Algo que me sorprendio mucho fue la mas reciente consola de Sony el PS5 Pro, que viene si unidad de disco. Al principio con el primer lanzamiento de la consola podías escoger entre la version de disco y la digital, ahora es una opcion comprar la unidad de disco, la cual tiene un costo elevadísimo.

Esto cobra mas sentido cuando investigando encontre un Twitt de Mat Piscatella, quien trabaja como analista para la empresa de tecnología e investigación de mercado Circana. Mat se especializa en la industria de los videojuegos, mensualmente ofrece datos sobre la relación de ventas entre ambos formatos,y es clara la tendencia, el mercado cada vez mas se aleja del formato físico, entonces podríamos decir ¿llegó el fin de este formato?
