I don't usually talk much about what I do outside of hive in terms of work, but one of the things I usually do is computer maintenance.
You see, the other day they brought me a pretty old computer that they wanted to recover, because the computer hadn't been on for a long time and when they turned it on it started sparking and even blew smoke out of the power supply.
These were definitely not good signs, so I warned the owner of the computer that it was very likely that this machine would not work for a long time, or that it was likely that he would not even manage to turn it on again.
Here you can see that it is a VIT brand computer, a brand that arrived in my country some time ago.
No suelo hablar mucho de lo que hago fuera de hive en cuanto a trabajos, pero una de las cosas que suelo hacer es mantenimiento a computadoras.
Verán, el otro día me trajeron una computadora bastante vieja que querían recuperar, pues el equipo tenía mucho tiempo sin encender y cuando lo encendieron empezó a echar chispas e incluso expulsó humo por la fuente de poder.
Definitivamente no fueron buenas señales, así que le advertí al dueño de la computadora que era muy probable que esa máquina no funcionara por mucho tiempo, o que era probable que ni tan siquiera lograra encenderla otra vez.
Aquí pueden ver que es un equipo marca VIT, una marca que llegó a mi país hace un tiempo.
Well, I opened the equipment and found to my surprise that it was not that deteriorated. It even looked clean. That is in terms of the motherboard area, the hard drive and the optical drives.
I guess it was a computer that was stored for a long time in a box, that's why it wasn't too dusty. However, the power supply was a different story.
Pues bien, abrí el equipo y me encontré con la sorpresa de que no estaba tan deteriorado. Hasta se veía limpio. Eso en cuanto al área de la tarjeta madre, el disco duro y las unidades ópticas.
Supongo que era una computadora que estuvo guardada durante mucho tiempo en una caja, por eso no tenía demasiado polvo. Sin embargo, en la fuente de poder era otra historia.

You see, I removed the power supply, tested it and it wouldn't turn on.
I jumpered it with a click on the connectors, plugged it into the power and it wouldn't turn on. Interestingly, when I unclipped the power supply I noticed that it was leaking a liquid from inside.
I opened the power supply very carefully and found this surprise.
Verán, retiré la fuente de poder, la probé y no encendía.
Le hice un puente con un clic en los conectores, la enchufé a la corriente y no encendió. Curiosamente, cuando solté la fuente me di cuenta que estaba soltando un líquido desde su interior.
Abrí la fuente con mucho cuidado y me encontré con esta sorpresa.

Yes, there was liquid in the source and a lot of dead geckos inside, there in the photo above you can see one of them.
On the other hand, the internal components also had this liquid and one of the capacitors had exploded, which gives me to understand that it is likely that this liquid came from one of these that exploded.
Sí, había líquido en la fuente y un montón de geckos muertos en su interior, ahí en la foto de arriba pueden ver uno de ellos.

Luckily I had a spare power supply, which was from my old computer. This would serve to replace this one, so I could also get some money out of this old power supply I had in storage.
Por suerte tenía una fuente de poder para repuesto, que era de mi vieja computadora. Esta serviría para reemplazar esta, así también lograría sacarle algo de dinero a esta vieja fuente que tenía guardada.

Well, I installed it in its place but before connecting it, I did some tests and yes, the power supply turned on.

When I plugged in the computer, it did not turn on, but it did make the electrical circuit, because some lights on the motherboard came on.
So I took the task of checking the power button on the top of the case.
Al conectar la computadora esta no encendía, pero sí hacía el circuito eléctrico, porque algunas luces de la tarjeta madre encendían.
Por esto, me di la tarea de revisar el botón de encendido que estaba en la parte superior del case.

When I opened the whole cover where the button was, I did some tests and indeed, the push button was damaged, so the computer would not turn on with this button.
Al abrir toda la cubierta en donde estaba el botón, hice unas pruebas y en efecto, el pulsador estaba dañado, así que la computadora no encendería con este botón.

I thought about replacing it, but I didn't have a spare. I had a small push button from another pc and tried it, but it was too low and moved too much.
Even with silicone it didn't fit well, plus it wouldn't show the led light if I removed the old button and left the new one.
Pensé en reemplazarlo, pero no tenía un repuesto. Tenía un pequeño pulsador de otra pc y se lo probé, pero quedaba muy abajo y se movía demasiado.
Incluso con silicón no quedaba bien, además de que no mostraría la luz led si quitaba el botón anterior y dejaba el nuevo.
So I decided to make an unaesthetic but functional repair, I took the push button I had, spare from another pc, and connected it directly to the power wires of that button.
Por ello decidí hacer una reparación poco estética pero funcional, tomé el pulsador que tenía, respuesto de otra pc, y lo conecté directamente a los cables de alimentación de ese botón.

To clarify, I first did a test with some loose wires that went to the original pushbutton. When I reconnected these loose wires, the machine turned on. So as soon as I had the solution, I took these wires out of the pc and connected the push button.
Aclaro, primero hice una prueba con unos cables sueltos que iban al pulsador original. Al volver a conectar estos cables sueltos, se encendía la máquina. Así que tan pronto tuve la solución, llevé estos cables fuera de la pc y conecté el pulsador.

I tried not to leave the cable loose in the case of the pc, so I just stuck the cable in one of the slits of the machine and the pushbutton was hanging just a little bit.
Traté de que el cable no quedase suelto en el case de la pc, así que solo pegué el cable en una de las rendijas de la máquina y quedó el pulsador colgando solo un poco.

When I plugged in the pc and pressed the push button, the machine finally turned on. It picked up the operating system but it had a corrupted one too, so I had to install a new one.
Al conectar la pc y presionar el pulsador, finalmente la máquina encendió. Levantó sistema operativo pero lo tenía dañado también, así que tuve que instalarle uno nuevo.
As you can see, it was a computer that had been in storage for a long time and this caused certain failures. I gave the customer his fully functional computer, but I warned him to use it with care, because it was an old computer. In spite of everything, it is in good condition, so I hope it will last him for a while.

Como ven, era un equipo que estuvo durante un buen tiempo guardado y esto ocasionó ciertas fallas. Le entregué al cliente su computadora completamente funcional, pero le advertí que la usara con cuidado, pues era un equipo viejo. A pesar de todo, está en buenas condiciones, así que espero le dure por un tiempo.
