It's been a while (over a year) since I've shared with you the new acquisitions that make my digital experience pleasant and functional. Why? Well, I don't know for sure. Perhaps some procrastination. Even doubts that the content does not add value, and even a mistrust of incurring certain petulance, at the possibility of showing myself as an uninhibited technological exhibitionist.
How complicated we human beings can be, no!
Bah, how wrong it is to share one's achievements and experiences with others with like-minded passions! Although, come to think of it, passion and necessity merge in these matters for a greater purpose.
Enough lurking, and let's get into the hot zone.
In one of my posts within the community (see), I commented that I replaced my Dell Optiplex 9020 Micro, powered by an Intel Core I5 4590T processor (Fourth generation - 2014), with 16 GB DDR3 RAM, 256 GB SSD and a 1 TB HDD storage, running a GNU - Linux distro (Fedora 41). Now, I have another main computer in Mini Tower format: a Lenovo ThinkStation P358 (AMD Ryzen 9 PRO 5945 with an 8 GB VRAM Nvidia T1000 GPU) from 2022, which, by the way, replaced the one that replaced the competent one-liter old-fashioned mini-computer. I can't be happier! I have been lucky.
What did you do with the mini PC? Did you sell it, or did you give it away?
Well, I kept it for a long time on a little table on the side, turned off. I turned it on from time to time, you know, to warm up the electronics. Until, at one point, it turned off and emitted a beeping sound characteristic of DELLs due to power failures. The technician determined that a chip had crashed. Fortunately, he had a spare and replaced it, bringing it back to life. Well, to work, the day it comes to life, I think we'll be toast, Skynet style from Cameron's dreaded Terminator. In that, almost a year will have passed.
A couple of months ago, after much thought and research, I decided to use the little warrior as a NAS (Network Attached Storage) type home file server and create my private cloud. In 2007, I implemented a similar concept with a Mac Mini. Of course, it was more of an entertainment center restricted to the Apple ecosystem. Now, however, my intention focused on the use of free software, one that would compete with cloud services such as Google products and Netflix, but without the associated restrictions and costs. Plus, the benefits of tinkering and learning in the process.
The result. A little technological Frankenstein. The little guy is operational 24 hours a day, serving multimedia files of interest that I have been collecting in my wanderings through the web. I'm also testing a virtual office that interacts with mobile clients. I'm having a great time, learning and testing my skills at an age when I'm supposed to be resting and enjoying the golden age. Bullshit! Pure lies. The pleasure is in never stopping learning and being useful, at least, to yourself and your loved ones.
If you will bear with me, let me tell you about the home server. You already know part of the hardware (Optiplex 9020), which is connected to a wireless router with internet access to provide the local area network (LAN). As for the software, it uses Debian Server as an operating system Debian Server, optimized to run OMV (Open Media Vault) version 7. The latter is a marvel, through a web interface, manages users and files, as well as providing other services under container technology (Docker). This reminded me of the client-server environment of yesteryear, but masterfully brought home.
I won't lie to you. Although there are enough very didactic tutorials on the Web to implement a low-cost home server. In practice, you will make some mistakes, such as, for example, getting carried away by the examples without planning the data structure (areas or folders) you need or want. This can lead to redundancy and inefficiency in storage management. If this is the case, good luck; it is the best thing that can happen. It is not for nothing that you learn more from your mistakes.
In my case, it was impossible to go live with these web services. I discovered that my Internet provider uses a CG-NAT (Carrier Grade Network Address Translation) technology. That is, you don't have a public IP; you share it with other users. Consequently, I could not open the router ports to go out into cyberspace. I had in mind to launch my website, created in WordPress. In any case, I think it was better this way for the time being. Being exposed to so many malicious hackers, without solid knowledge, was a suicide caused by the excitement of the first achievements.
In the meantime, I will continue to explore with Jellyfin (a sort of Netflix for books and videos) and Next Cloud (a Google-like cloud suite, Dropbox, Box, and OneDrive). Nor do I rule out imbibing in learning the use of type 1 hypervisors, such as Proxmox, until I find the solution that suits me best.
I hope that my account of this experience will inspire your imagination in the ways we carry Geek within us. However, if you wish, I could delve into the details in a future post, if you also dare to start a similar project.

Quizás, algo de procrastinación. Incluso, dudas de que el contenido no aporte valor, y hasta un recelo para no incurrir en cierta petulancia, ante la posibilidad de mostrarme como un exhibicionista tecnológico desinhibido.

¡Bah! ¡Qué mal hay en compartir los logros y las experiencias con otros afines en pasiones! Aunque, pensándolo bien, pasión y necesidad se funden en estos asuntos para un propósito mayor.
Basta de merodear, y entremos en la zona caliente.
En uno de mis posts dentro de la Comunidad (ver), comenté que reemplacé mi Dell Optiplex 9020 Micro, potenciado por un procesador Intel Core I5 4590T (Cuarta generación - 2014), con 16 GB de RAM DDR3, 256 GB de SSD y un HDD de 1 TB almacenamiento, corriendo una distro de GNU – Linux (Fedora 41). Ahora, dispongo de otro computador principal en formato Mini Torre: una Lenovo ThinkStation P358 (AMD Ryzen 9 PRO 5945 con una GPU Nvidia T1000 de 8 GB de VRAM) del 2022, que, por cierto, remplazó al que sustituyó al competente miniordenador vetusto de un litro. ¡No puedo estar más contento! He sido afortunado.

Bueno, la mantuve un buen tiempo en una mesita al lado apagada. La encendía de vez en cuando, ya saben, para darle calor a los componentes electrónicos. Hasta que, en una de esas, se apagó y emitió un pitido característico de los DELL por fallas de energía. El técnico determinó el colapso de un chip. Por fortuna, él tenía uno de repuesto y lo reemplazó, volviendo a la vida. Bueno, a funcionar, el día que cobre vida, creo que estaremos fritos, al estilo Skynet del temido Terminator de Cameron. De eso, habrá pasado casi un año.
Hace un par de meses, luego de pensarlo e investigarlo mucho, decidí usar al pequeño guerrero como un servidor de archivo casero, tipo NAS (Network Attached Storage) y crear mi propia nube privada. En el 2007, implementé un concepto afín con una Mac Mini. Claro, era más un centro de entretenimiento de uso restrictivo al ecosistema de Apple. En cambio, ahora, mi intención se centró en el uso de software libre, uno, que compitiera con servicios en la nube como los productos de Google y Netflix, pero sin las restricciones y costos asociados. Además, de los beneficios de cacharrear y aprender en el proceso.
El resultado. Un pequeño Frankenstein tecnológico. El pequeñín está operativo las 24 horas del día, sirviendo archivos multimedia de interés que he ido recopilando en mis periplos por la web. Además, estoy ensayando con una oficina virtual que interactúa con clientes móviles. Me la estoy pasando genial, aprendiendo y poniendo a pruebas mis capacidades a una edad en la que, supuestamente, debería estar reposando y disfrutando de la época dorada. ¡Pamplinas! Puras mentiras. El placer está en nunca dejar de aprender y ser útil, al menos, para ti mismo y tus seres queridos.
Sí me tenéis paciencia, déjame hablarte del servidor casero. Ya conocéis parte del hardware (Optiplex 9020), el cual está conectado a un router inalámbrico con acceso a la internet para proporcionar la red local (LAN). En cuanto al software, usa como sistema operativo Debian Server, optimizado para correr OMV (Open Media Vault) versión 7. Este último es una maravilla, mediante una interfaz web, gestiona usuarios y archivos, así como también, provee otros servicios bajo la tecnología de contenedores (Docker). Esto me hizo recordar al entorno cliente-servidor de antaño empresarial, pero llevado magistralmente a casa.
No te mentiré. Si bien, existen suficientes tutoriales muy didácticos en la Web para implementar un servidor casero de bajo costo. En la práctica incurrirás en ciertos errores, como, por ejemplo, dejarse llevar por los ejemplos sin planificar la estructura de datos (áreas o carpetas) que necesitas o deseas. Esto te puede llevar a redundancia e ineficacia en el manejo del almacenamiento. Si es así, en hora buena, es lo mejor que puede pasarnos. No en vano, uno aprende más de los errores.
En mi caso, fue imposible salir al ruedo con estos servicios a la web. Descubrí, que mi proveedor de internet usa una tecnología CG-NAT (Carrier Grade Network Address Translation). Es decir, uno no dispone de una IP pública, la compartes con otros usuarios. En consecuencia, no pude abrir los puertos del router para salir al ciberespacio. Tenía en mente, lanzar mi propio sitio web, creado en WordPress. En todo caso, creo que fue mejor así por los momentos. Quedar expuesto ante tantos hackers maliciosos, sin conocimientos sólidos, era un suicidio causado por la emoción de los primeros logros.
Mientras tanto, seguiré explorando con Jellyfin (una especie de Netflix para libros y vídeos) y con Next Cloud (suite en la nube tipo Google, Dropbox, Box y OneDrive). Como tampoco, descartó imbuirme en aprender el uso de hipervisores tipo 1, tales como Proxmox, hasta llegar con la solución que más me convenga.
Espero que el relato de mi experiencia en este sentido, incentive tu imaginación en los caminos de Geek que llevamos adentro. No obstante, si así lo quisiereis, podría en un próximo post ahondar en los detalles, si también te atrevieras en iniciar un proyecto similar.
