Greetings to all the Geek Zone community! In this new series of posts, I have decided to combine two of my great passions: video games and medieval history.
My idea is to upload gameplays of campaign episodes starring different heroes of Age of Empires II, and use each one to tell the historical events depicted in the game, analyzing both the facts correctly represented and the historical errors that may arise. I hope you enjoy it!
Jadwiga of Polonia
Jadwiga of Poland, also known as “Jadwiga”, was the first woman crowned as “King” of Poland. She was the daughter of Louis I of Hungary and belonged to the Anjou dynasty. Her sister inherited the Kingdom of Hungary and Hedwig took the kingdom of Poland.
Scenario N°1 Hedwig: History
In the introduction of the Age of Empires II campaign, it is mentioned that Hedwig was betrothed to William of Habsburg. However, the Polish nobles wanted to annul that betrothal to ensure the independence of the kingdom and avoid foreign influence. In the game, while Hedwig was on her way to Krakow to be crowned, she suffered a series of attacks by Dukes Vladislaus II of Opole and Siemowit IV of Mazovia, who were trying to marry her and crown themselves as kings of Poland.
Polonia (1370-1382)
Although the campaign dramatizes these events, there are no historical records confirming specific rebellions led by these dukes to gain Hedwig's hand and control of the kingdom. The in-game depiction is an interpretation to give a playable experience of that time, but is not based on documented historical facts of armed rebellions by these dukes.
At the conclusion of the supposed rebellion in the Age of Empires II campaign, Hedwig is crowned Queen of Poland and is united in marriage with Jogaila, the Grand Duke of Lithuania. The Polish nobles made this strategic decision to ensure a solid alliance with the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and guarantee the Christianization of the neighboring duchy.
Scenario N°1 Jadwiga: Gameplay
Before talking about the gameplay, I want to clarify that I am playing the campaign on the highest possible difficulty, which provides an additional challenge and makes the experience more interesting.
In my first attempt at the scenario, I failed in the first five minutes. At the start of the mission, we had a small army and our objective was to escort Hedwig to Krakow to be crowned. However, the mission quickly became complicated due to the numerical superiority of the pursuing enemies.
On my second attempt, I used a different strategy: I sent several troops as bait to distract the enemy forces and keep them occupied, which allowed me to gain time and ensure that Hedwig reached the city of Krakow unharmed.
I arrived in Krakow, where Hedwig was crowned Queen. I was granted an urban center, which allowed me to start building a solid economy to support an army and face the enemies on the map: the Duke of Opole and the Duke of Mazovia.
Following my usual strategy, I fortified the area around my base with walls and defenses, which was crucial to prevent a premature invasion by the enemy, which at the time I was clearly not in a position to repel. This gave me the time I needed to develop my economy without interruption, gather resources and prepare my troops for the offensive.
With my first army ready, I decided to launch an offensive against my weakest rival, the Duke of Mazovia. To defeat him, I needed to reduce his army to only five units. However, the enemy had a highly fortified base, which complicated a direct attack. I prepared my army on the outskirts of his base and sent a couple of units as a decoy to lure the enemy troops. My goal was to draw them out and move the battle to more favorable terrain, where my forces would have the advantage and we could wear the Duke of Mazovia's army down to five units.
With the Duke of Mazovia subdued, I had only one rival left: the Duke of Opole, protected by a walled city and two castles. Taking advantage of a merchant who offered me four stone throwers for 1500 gold, I accepted the offer, knowing that they would be effective against the fortifications. With my army assembled, I laid siege to the city and demolished its castles, thus securing victory.

Eduviges de Polonia
Eduviges de Polonia, conocida también como "Jadwiga", fue la primera mujer coronada como "Rey" de Polonia. Era la hija de Luis I de Hungria y pertenencia a la dinastia Anjou. Su hermana heredó el Reino de Hungria y Eduviges se quedó con el reino de Polonia.

Escenario N°1 Eduviges: Gameplay
Antes de hablar del gameplay, quiero aclarar que estoy jugando la campaña en la dificultad más alta posible, lo que proporciona un desafío adicional y hace la experiencia más interesante.
En mi primer intento del escenario, fallé en los primeros cinco minutos. Al inicio de la misión, contábamos con un pequeño ejército y nuestro objetivo era escoltar a Eduviges hasta Cracovia para que fuera coronada. Sin embargo, la misión se complicó rápidamente debido a la superioridad numérica de los enemigos que nos perseguían.
En mi segundo intento, utilicé una estrategia diferente: envié a varias tropas como carnada para distraer a las fuerzas enemigas y mantenerlas ocupadas, lo que me permitió ganar tiempo y asegurar que Eduviges llegara a la ciudad de Cracovia sin sufrir daños.
Llegué a Cracovia, donde Eduviges fue coronada como Reina. Me otorgaron un centro urbano, lo que me permitió comenzar a construir una economía sólida para sostener un ejército y enfrentar a los enemigos del mapa: el duque de Opole y el duque de Mazovia.
Siguiendo mi estrategia habitual, fortifiqué los alrededores de mi base con murallas y defensas, lo cual fue crucial para prevenir una invasión prematura de los enemigos, que en ese momento claramente no estaba en condiciones de repeler. Con mi primer ejército listo, decidí lanzar una ofensiva contra mi rival más débil, el Duque de Mazovia. Para derrotarlo, necesitaba reducir su ejército a solo cinco unidades. Sin embargo, el enemigo contaba con una base altamente fortificada, lo que complicaba un ataque directo. Preparé mi ejército en las afueras de su base y envié un par de unidades como señuelo para atraer a las tropas enemigas. Mi objetivo era hacerlos salir y llevar la batalla a un terreno más favorable, donde mis fuerzas tuvieran la ventaja y pudiéramos desgastar al ejército del Duque de Mazovia hasta cinco unidades.
Con el Duque de Mazovia sometido, solo me quedaba un rival: el Duque de Opole, protegido por una ciudad amurallada y dos castillos. Aprovechando un mercader que me ofreció cuatro lanzapiedras por 1500 de oro, acepté la oferta, sabiendo que serían efectivos contra las fortificaciones. Con mi ejército reunido, sitié la ciudad y derribé sus castillos, asegurando así la victoria.
