Welcome to my post once again, I'm Nitsu and today I want to show you the process of modeling a part in PLA for my boss, plus I would also like to share a brief analysis of how 3D printing can help us to replace imported parts being able to manufacture them in less time and also with a lower cost.

To begin with, I will briefly describe the situation of imports in my country, Argentina. In my country we have a very scarce industry and the vast majority of parts or materials for manufacturing have to be brought from abroad. In my current job we are in charge of creating intelligent buildings which leads us to have to order many electronic boards and components from abroad and as in Argentina lack of dollars are closing imports to try not to go abroad which causes overpricing, shortages or very long delivery times of products which can delay a simple project between 15 or 30 days to be generous.
Para comenzar voy a contar brevemente la situación de las importaciones en mi país argentina. En mi país tenemos una industria muy escasa y la gran mayoría de piezas o materiales para la manufactura tienen que ser traídos de afuera. En mi trabajo actual nos encargamos de crear edificios inteligentes lo cual nos lleva a tener que pedir muchos plaquetas y componentes electrónicos del exterior y como en Argentina faltan dólares van cerrando las importaciones para intentar que no se vayan al exterior lo cual provoca sobreprecios, desabastecimiento o tiempos muy largos de entrega de productos lo cual puede atrasar un proyecto simple entre 15 o 30 días siendo generosos.

Al no conseguirlo mi jefe me pregunto si era posible fabricarlo, me dio la muestra y comencé a modelar.
Take the maximum measurements and build the rectangle inside the solidworks program to later extrude it giving it a thickness of 5mm, round all its corners and also round the edges of the front part of the casing. Finally I generated a casting achieving the piece that you see in the image, the horizontal cut was made to see the thickness of the piece and to be sure that everything was as I needed.
Tome las medidas máximas y arme el rectángulo dentro del programa solidworks para posteriormente extruirlo dándole un espesor de 5mms redondear todas sus esquinas y también redondear las aristas de la parte frontal de la carcasa. Para finalizar genere un vaciado logrando la pieza que ven en la imagen, el corte horizontal lo hice para ver los espesores de la pieza y quedarme tranquilo de que todo quedara como yo necesitaba.

The original piece of the Carrier brand per unit costs about 30 dollars not counting import taxes and delivery times, the final piece that I design costs about $300 Argentine pesos (0.5 dollars) just for material and I am charging my boss $1000 Argentine pesos (1.80 dollars) plus the delivery times are tiny since printing this piece takes about 2 hours if I remember correctly.
La pieza original de la marca Carrier por unidad cuesta unos 30 dólares sin contar los impuestos a las importaciones y los tiempos de entrega, la pieza final que yo diseñe cuesta unos $300 pesos argentinos (0.5 dólares) solo de material y yo se la estoy cobrando a mi jefe $1000 pesos argentinos (1.80 dólares) sumado a que los tiempos de entrega son ínfimos ya que imprimir esta pieza tarda unas 2hs si mal no recuerdo.

I eliminated the line segments that I didn't need and once I had everything ready I made another extrusion flush with the edge of the piece. Once I had this I continued using the caliper to measure the diameters of the through holes, there are located the screws to place them in the wall so I had to be very precise; as you will see it has a pair of concentric circles and I understand that they are to place a thin rubber mesh so that they are well pressed to the wall and that the device can correctly measure the internal pressure of the room where it is placed.
Fui eliminando los segmentos de línea que no necesitaba y una vez tuve todo listo realicé otra extrusión al ras del borde de la pieza. Una vez ya tenia esto seguí usando el calibre para medir los diámetros de los agujeros pasantes, por allí van ubicados los tornillos para colocarlos en la pared así que debía ser bien preciso; como verán tiene un par de círculos concéntricos y tengo entendido que son para que al colocar una fina maya de goma estos queden bien presionados a la pared y que el aparato pueda medir correctamente la presión interna de la sala donde se lo coloque.
Finally, the only thing left to do was to model the shaft that protrudes from the central part of this plastic part, for this I added some small reinforcements because the thin and tall cylindrical parts in 3D printed parts can tend to have little resistance due to the way FDM manufacturing is done by horizontal layers.
Por último, solo restaba modelar el eje que sobresale de la parte central de esta pieza plástica, para ello agregue unos pequeños refuerzos debido a que las piezas cilíndricas finas y altas en las piezas impresas 3D pueden tender a tener poca resistencia debido a la forma de manufactura FDM por capas horizontales.
Once I had everything ready, I reviewed the most important general measurements and began to improve visual details such as sharp edge roundings (edges that end at 90°) and countersinks for the screws which allow the head of the screw to attach to the plastic part without the head of the screw protruding, in this case it is merely aesthetic, but in others, the countersink may have a much more important function.
Una vez tuve todo listo, revise las medidas generales más importante y comencé a mejorar detalles visuales como pueden ser redondeos de borde vivos (Bordes que terminan en 90°) y avellanados para los tornillos los cuales permiten que la cabeza del tornillo se acople a la pieza plástica sin que la cabeza de este sobresalga, en este caso es meramente estético, pero en otros, el avellanado, puede tener una función mucho más importante.

Then on a whim I modeled the small hemisphere that was on the outside, but for the final product it was more convenient to have the entire face flat to position it correctly on the printing base.
