The problem we currently have at home is the impact of electricity rates on our economy. Here in Mexico, as in so many places, we have faced an increase in electricity rates. At first, I confess that I felt a little shocked. I didn't know why the bill had almost tripled, until I read the news of the increase, and it all made sense.

In view of this new issue, we decided to take action. Some were simple to implement, others not so simple, so we hope they work and that the result of these changes will be reflected in the next electricity bill.
1. Nighttime disconnection.
One of the first measures I implemented was the nighttime disconnection. At home there are many appliances that, without us realising it, continue to consume energy while we are not using them. An example of these are all those that leave a light on, indicating that they are on “Stand By” or “Waiting” to be used. This can be very convenient during the day, as we don't have to wait for them to turn on completely. However, this translates into a lot of energy waste.
What I have chosen to do is that before I go to sleep, I switch off all the appliances that I do not use during the night. That is, everything except the refrigerator and the internet modem. To make this task a little easier, I have placed multi-contacts in the places where there are several appliances so that I only have to disconnect one thing. During the day I also do this, but I leave appliances such as the television or telephone connected, as I know that they are used multiple times during the day.
2. Smart Lights and Daylighting.
Have you ever wondered how much energy we waste on lighting empty spaces? Me too, and I decided to change it. That's how I not only stopped lighting unnecessary spaces, but also switched from traditional energy-saving bulbs to the new LED bulbs. These bulbs not only last longer, but also consume much less energy. And they give off a much brighter light. Which is really important for me, because my myopia has made my nights a big challenge and without proper lighting, I simply cannot see properly.
During the day, I resort to natural light to avoid using artificial lights. I do this by keeping the curtains open for most of the day. I used to refuse to do this because I like the atmosphere created by closed curtains much better. However, that forced me to have to turn on the lights, which is not an option with rising energy rates. So it was either strain my eyes, which leads to fatigue and headaches, or just open the curtains. Luckily, this house, in addition to large windows, has skylights that help make even more use of natural light.
3. A Fresh Roof
Here in Mexico, we are no strangers to how hot the weather can be. In fact, we recently suffered a pretty bad heat wave, which caused us to overuse the fan, which only added to our energy bill. Despite living in a relatively cool city, we started to look into the possibility of applying a product that would help us keep the sun's heat out of the house through the roof, as that is our biggest problem. The difficulty is that we didn't know which one to choose.
After researching in specialised shops what we could do, we opted for waterproofing the roof with a product called Fester. It's a kind of white paint, which is specially designed to reduce the internal temperature of the house. I was a bit sceptical, as I had never heard of such a product, but I trusted the salesman and, of course, my husband, who according to him had used it before. And well, I must admit I was wrong, because boy, did it work. Since they finished applying it to the roof, the house feels much nicer, and we are no longer so dependent on the fan. It was a small effort, as applying it was a lot of work, but it has brought great rewards in both comfort and savings.
And well, friends, these are just some of the ideas I have been implementing in my quest to reduce my energy consumption and keep those high electricity rates at bay. I hope you find these tips useful and that they inspire you to take similar steps to save money in your home.
Estrategias Prácticas para Ahorrar Energía en Casa
Hola, queridos amigos de #HomeSolutions. Hoy quiero compartir con ustedes una experiencia que últimamente nos está agobiando en casa y también les contaré la forma en la que hemos comenzado a lidiar con ella. El problema que tenemos actualmente en casa es el impacto de las tarifas eléctricas en nuestra economía, aquí en México, como en tantos lugares, nos hemos enfrentado a un aumento en las tarifas de energía eléctrica. Al principio, confieso que me sentí un poco descolocada. No sabía por qué el recibo había aumentado a casi el triple, hasta que leí la noticia del aumento y todo tuvo sentido.
En vista de esta nueva problemática, decidimos tomar medidas. Algunas fueron sencillas de aplicar, otras no tanto, así que esperamos que funcionen y que el resultado de estos cambios se vea reflejado en el siguiente recibo eléctrico.
1. Desconexión Nocturna
Una de las primeras medidas que implementé fue la desconexión nocturna. En casa existen muchísimos aparatos que, sin que nos demos cuenta, siguen consumiendo energía mientras no los usamos. Un ejemplo de estos son todos aquellos que dejan una luz prendida, indicándonos que se encuentran en "Stand By" o "En Espera" de ser utilizados. Esto puede ser muy cómodo durante el día, ya que no tenemos que esperar a que enciendan por completo. Sin embargo, esto se traduce en un gran gasto de energía.
Lo que yo opté por hacer es que antes de irme a dormir desconecto todos los aparatos que no empleo durante la noche. Es decir, todo menos el refrigerador y el módem del internet. Para hacer esta labor un poco más sencilla, he colocado multicontactos en los lugares donde hay varios aparatos y así solo debo desconectar una sola cosa. Durante el día también lo aplico, pero dejo conectados aparatos como la televisión o el teléfono, ya que sé que durante el día son empleados múltiples veces.
2. Luces Inteligentes e Iluminación Natural
¿Alguna vez se han preguntado cuánta energía desperdiciamos en iluminar espacios vacíos? Yo también, y decidí cambiarlo. Fue así como no solamente dejé de alumbrar espacios innecesarios, sino que también pasé de los tradicionales focos ahorradores a los novedosos focos LED. Este tipo de focos, además de durar más tiempo, consumen mucha menos energía. Y emiten una luz mucho más brillante. Lo cual es realmente importante para mí, ya que debido a mi miopía las noches se han convertido en un gran reto y sin una iluminación adecuada, simplemente no logro ver correctamente.
Durante el día recurro a la luz natural para evitar hacer uso de las luces artificiales. Esto lo hago manteniendo las cortinas abiertas durante prácticamente todo el día. Antes me rehusaba a hacerlo porque me gusta mucho más el ambiente que se crea con las cortinas cerradas. Sin embargo, eso me obligaba a tener que encender las luces, lo cual no es una opción con el incremento de las tarifas energéticas. Así que era forzar mucho la vista, lo que termina en cansancio y dolores de cabeza, o simplemente abrir las cortinas. Por suerte, esta casa, además de grandes ventanas, cuenta con tragaluces que ayudan a aprovechar aún más la luz natural.
3. Un Techo Fresco
Aquí, en México, no somos extraños a lo caluroso que puede ser el clima. De hecho, hace poco sufrimos una ola de calor bastante fuerte, la cual nos hizo abusar del ventilador, lo que solamente logró sumar más consumo a nuestro recibo. A pesar de vivir en una ciudad relativamente fresca, comenzamos a analizar la posibilidad de aplicar algún producto que nos ayude a que el calor del sol no penetre tanto a la casa a través del techo, ya que ese es nuestro mayor problema. El problema es que no sabíamos cuál elegir.
Después de investigar en los establecimientos especializados lo que podíamos hacer, optamos por impermeabilizar el techo con un producto llamado Fester. Es una especie de pintura blanca, la cual está especialmente diseñada para reducir la temperatura interna de la casa. Yo estaba un poco escéptica, ya que no había escuchado de un producto así, pero confié en el vendedor y, por supuesto, en mi esposo que según él lo había usado antes. Y bueno, debo admitir que estaba equivocada, porque vaya que sí funcionó. Desde que terminaron de aplicarlo al techo, la casa se siente mucho más agradable y hemos dejado de depender tanto del ventilador. Fue un pequeño esfuerzo, ya que aplicarlo fue muy laborioso, pero ha traído consigo grandes recompensas tanto en comodidad como en ahorro.
Y bueno, amigos, estas son solo algunas de las ideas que he ido implementando en mi búsqueda por reducir mi consumo energético y mantener a raya esas tarifas eléctricas elevadas. Espero que estos consejos les sean útiles y les inspiren a tomar medidas similares para poder ahorrar en sus hogares.
