Australian houses are notoriously leaky... especially when you are comparing them to the much better sealed European houses. A sort of combination of a forgiving climate where you won't freeze to death and the general lack of awareness and care about the use of energy. However, those things are slowly coming to an end... at least the lack of care about energy prices. Gas and electricity are climbing upwards in cost... and much of it can't be fixed by whinging and whining. Pity that the same can't be said for the petrol guzzlers that we put on our roads...
... anyway, we have been steadily increasing the energy efficiency of our house bit by bit. We have moved mostly off gas, and gone to the heat pump reverse-cycle heating/cooling systems... and moved to a similar heat pump for the hot water. Of course, it helped that both systems were old gas ones... which were due for replacement anyway!
... and during the summer, we have lots of tree shading, which means our house definitely stays cool. However, for us, it is the winter months that prove more challenging. We now have a glazing retrofit on half the house, and will complete the rest when we have the spare cash... and the roof is insulated, but we should also get around to doing the under house parts as well. On the list of things... windows first!
However, one of the simpler things that I've been putting off has been the sealing of windows and doors... there are many cracks and gaps that are only a few millimetres in width, but you can feel noticeable draughts coming in... So, a batch of these strips will be perfect for reducing the amount of heat that we lose to these little culprits.

Crazily easy to fit... even for a complete DIY dufus like me. Cut to size, clean the surface, and then stick to the frames of the doors and windows... the only thing to be careful of is that you don't end up blocking the opening and closing parts of the door.

It looks pretty tidy... at least when it is new... and I think it is easily removed and replaced if it starts to get too scrappy. I will need to pick up some more rolls of these things, and slightly larger ones for the under door gaps... or door snakes.
I only did one window and one door near the kitchen, but the difference is huge! Even the girls noticed it the minute that they came home from school! So, do yourself a favour, seal up those cracks... simple, cheap, and highly effective!
