United States based users of the popular video platform, TikTok, are rightfully concerned about the future of the app. TikTok has been banned, lasted about a day, came back, and now faces another ban date after getting an extension by the Trump Administration. It seems TikTok is backing off their stance of never selling TikTok, only a tiny bit, by working to create a 100% unique and at least majority United States based investor backing. This is not the TikTok that you are using today, this new version is being referred to as TikTok M2 right now. Those concerns though, are VERY real things to worry about.
First, Your Content
Let’s get the big question out of the way, shall we? According to MacRumors user data will reportedly be transferred to the United States infrastructure.
Right now, TikTok M2 will become available early September 2025. If you have not migrated to the M2 edition by March 2026 then you will lose access as the current TikTok app will be officially banned at that point.
Apple Just Has to Be Troublesome
Continuing with the MacRumors article it seems Apple just has to be different, troublesome even. Apparently, they do not allow region-specific forks of apps to share the same listing in iTunes.
This means that, at least on Apple devices, TikTok M2 will have to have a unique name and unique store identification. This will certainly cause some confusion with new users, and potentially current users trying to get the correct app.
There is no word on this being the case with Google Play and Android devices.
A U.S. Based Buyer Potentially Agreed On
Right now, there is simply no information on who the potential buyer is. Inc.com states they are unknown. I would link to the original article they sourced but other than reading the headline, you cannot see anything without subscribing to their site.
Again, the main points to pay attention to here is the new app will be controlled by United States government approved owners. Your content will migrate over to the new app. The new app will be available in early September and the old app will close down completely for U.S. based users in March 2026.
