Holy Week is special for many people and specially for those who celebrate Easter because there are many important days, and each day has it's own traditions and meanings, and at this time family gatherings is mostly seen. However, as a Muslim, I don’t celebrate these days. Because, Muslims has different type of events and it's called Ramadan.
Ramadan is the month of fasting and every Muslim starts fasting in this month. In the evening everyone breaks their fast and it's called Iftar time. Well, whenever I think of my childhood, I recall how exciting it was during Ramadan because my father would help to decorate our house and my mother would cook delicious foods for Iftar. Also, my father and brother would often go to the mosque together. I remember one recent Ramadan in the month of March 2025, the smell of delicious food filled the air as my mother was cooking for us. It felt like a time when everyone would come together for Iftar, and there I could feel a strong sense of joy.
I remember how me and my brother would wake up early, and recite the Quran. After that, we would attend the five daily prayers. My mother would cook delicious dishes for Iftar, and we would all sit, and patiently wait for the Azan. The highlight of the day was breaking our fast. My parents would invite relatives over to have Iftar with us. The time of Ramadan was always fun and joyful time it was filled with excitement because I used to have Iftar with my cousins. We would also share our food with the neighbors.
As I was growing up, I saw that some things has changed in me about how I experience Ramadan. My excitement shifted to something deeper understanding of it's meaning. I began to appreciate food with wholeheartedly, I understood that many people don’t have enough to eat. We fast to understand what it feels like to go hungry, Ramadan helps people to grow empathy and gratitude.
In my recent life, I still enjoy spending time with my family. Fasting is also very beneficial for our health, even though we do not realize it. As a child, I didn’t have this knowledge, but now I enjoy fasting with my friends and family.
Another change is that I started participating in volunteer activities, such as helping those in need. I hand out food to the poor and buy new clothes for them for Eid al-Fitr. By participating in this kind of works it makes me feel that I'm getting closer to Allah, as I’m using the blessings He gave me the ability to serve others.
One more thing I like about this month is getting out of classes early. Since everyone is fasting, our class schedules are very short during Ramadan, which I really enjoy. This Ramadan we got 14 days off to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, In conclusion, Ramadan has been the best thing of my life, my childhood and adulthood was precious because of it. Because this journey has transformed me into a different person.
