Social media networks today have lots of issues, whether with widespread censorship and "fact-checking," selling user data, using algorithms to manipulate behavior to start infighting and polarizing echochambers, or just a generally bad user experience. This diverse set of issues are all caused by the same overarching problem: misalignment of incentives. Here I go into detail on why social media sucks, and what we can do to fix it.
